Anyone have experience with donating a car?

DH's Jeep failed both the safety and emission inspections this weekend, and our mechanic says it will cost about $1700 for all of the repairs (which is probably double what the car is actually worth).  Given that we could probably only get $500 if we sold it as is (and would still have to deal with the hassle of getting the tags renewed first), we're thinking we will just donate it to charity and hopefully get a few hundred dollars as a tax deduction.  Does anyone have any experience with doing this, and if so, any particular charity you'd recommend?  It seems like the process is pretty painless, based on a few charities' websites, but I don't know anyone who has actually done this.  Right now, we're thinking of donating to CCFA, since DH has colitis, but are open to suggestions based on others' experiences.  TIA!

(Or if anyone wants to buy a 1998 Jeep Cherokee that has a rusted-out exhaust system, a broken catalytic (sp?) converter, leaks in the brake lines, and a few other things wrong with it, just let me know!)

Re: Anyone have experience with donating a car?

  • We just donated our work vehicle to Habitat for Humanity- I did the legal paperwork for it and it was super easy.  We did it 12 days ago, and we don't have the tax receipt yet, but they promised it within 30 days, so I'm not overly concerned we won't get it.

We went with Habitat because they volunteered to tow our no longer safe to drive Suburban, where most people couldn't tow a car that big/ heavy.

  • I donated a car to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since one of my brothers is diabetic. As I recall, they gave me a receipt on the spot, and told me if the car sold for more than $500, they would send me an updated one in the mail.

It was super painless and easy, I would totally do it again.

It was some years ago, but my recollection of the tax situation was that you could write off $500, or whatever the car actually sold for if it was more than $500.

  • We donated one to Purple Heart. All we did was leave the key and title under the seat and they left the receipt in our mailbox. They took care of everything. We weren't home when they towed it away.

We've donated two cars to Purple Heart and it was really easy (the hardest part was finding the title).  Both times they sold for more than $500 so they mailed us a new tax receipt.

  • We also donated to Purple Heart, and it was very easy. They towed my car away.

Oddly, I saw "my" car parked on the street in DC a few years later. I know it was my car, because it had some very distinctive markings that were still there. It was kind of surreal.

  • I donated to Melwood

  • Thanks, everyone!  Glad to hear it was a pretty easy process.  I don't think we have the energy to deal with selling it for a few hundred dollars more than we'd get with the tax deduction, so I think we will be going the donation route.

  • We've donated one to Purple Heart and one to NPR.  Both were easy peasy.  Ditto PP on minimum $500 tax deduction. Neither of ours sold for more at auction.
