I LOVED my company and my bosses. Seriously. They seemed like the kind of people that really care about their employees.
Over the summer they got an offer on our company (they sell every 3-5 yrs or so) and it was really great. We would all get offered to keep our jobs (since the new owners were basically just taking over the existing company) AND we were getting raises and stock options! It was win-win for everyone.
Well, that deal fell through and they decided since they were expecting their multi-million dollar bonuses that they would still sell. They found new buyers and this time kept everything hush hush from the employees. We knew nothing about the new potential buys. There was no assurance of jobs or that they were good people.
Got an email yesterday morning saying they signed it and it will go through on or before November 30th. Nothing about our jobs or anything. So I asked and apparently this is an established company IN DALLAS. So not only do they not need ANY of us, but if they did make an offer we would have to move. WHY then in the email from the boss does it say this is a great opportunity of the company and all of it's employees???? Because it SEEMS like this is a SH!T opportunity for all of the employees except the top few who are going to make millions and retire. UGH! I've already asked them all to write reference letters and I've sent my resume all over Houston, but this is not the time to be looking for a job.....
I'm getting married the first week of November, and then I'm going to be an unemployed newlywed in a recession.
F*ck.
Re: frustrated with my company! venting... sorry :(
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and used against you. My Blog
Oh gosh did you know before you left or found out the day you got back? Yikes.
No, they don't have any plans to open an office here. That would make things better though!
Or that I'll just find another job! LOL
I'm an office manager for an oil company, but it's a small company so I do a little bit of everything for each department on top of general office stuff.
I'm trying to be positive! I started my own business about a year and half ago but I'm not making enough to live off of. Here's to hoping that my fiance will get a big promotion and I'll get a big enough bonus to get my business really up and running!
You know for certain they do not want to have a regional office? My company is headquartered in Dallas, however I work in a regional office. An O&G company may certainly want a local presence. I would get my resume together, just in case. It sounds like your current duties are broad enough you should not have a whole lot of trouble finding something if you are general administrative assistant/OM.
NOPE! I had no clue. And all 4 partners came to the wedding!
O&G is doing really well right now so hopefully you can find something else quickly.
If you don't mind me asking, what business did you start up?

I updated my resume yesterday and already sent them all an email asking for reference letters! I'm trying to be proactive.
If I can get a company to give me an interview, I'm not worried. I'm just worried about getting them to look at me enough to get an interview. This is my first "professional job" out of college and I will just have here 11.5 months when the sale is final. Everything I'm looking at says 10+ years experience!
Julie - I looked at your blog after you replied and saw you do wedding photography. My business is actually wedding/event planning. Here's my facebook page:

(Am I allowed to paste this on here since it's not the Knot?)
I'm so sorry this is happening to you.
I was layed off back in '09 the day before my wedding and was out of work for 8 months. It was super tough but I had to keep praying and sending out my resume. I finally got a job thanks to my connections but it's not in O&G which I looooved where I worked and what I did.
It really does suck for lack of a better word. But keep your head up and pray for the best outcome.
Like a pp said, O&G is looking good right now, so hopefully you can find a job in that industry again. I'm hoping my past experience can get me back in the door to O&G.
Good luck!
Sorry you are going through this... I went through something similar last year when my company (also an oil company!) closed their office in Calgary.... I was lucky though in the end as it all worked out for the best and DH got a posting down here
And now we have a baby so Im a SAHM!... so sometimes it does work out for the best even though stressful at the time!
Anyway I just wanted to suggest if you haven't already to join LinkedIn. I joined last year when I wasn't sure what we were going to do, and I literally get emails every week asking if Im interested in x job.... so it might be worth it for you too! It is a great networking tool!
Otherwise get out and talk to people, don't be afraid to tell friends you are looking for something new... and send your resume like you are doing.
Good luck
And it will all work out
