I should be really flattered that my kid thinks I'm so delicious. Except it's starting to stress me out.
She doesn't like the taste of formula. Like she makes crazy scrunched up faces, purses her lips, and turns her head away from the bottle. She's never done this with ANY food I've ever given her.
I've only tried a few times. Gave it to her straight once, mixed it in a bottle of bm last night - probably half and half. Thing is I don't want to keep mixing it with bm if she's going to reject it - I end up having to throw it all away and I'm at the end of the stash.
Also, both times I've given it to her when she was not terribly hungry. I just wanted to give her some tastes of it.
Today I sent in 2 bm bottles and enough formula for about 2 oz or so for a snack. We'll see how that goes.
I'm wondering if I should call my pedi to see if he can give me some samples - maybe we can find one that tastes better? Right now I'm working with a sample container of Enfamil.
Any suggestions would be good. TIA.
Re: Well, combo feeding is not going so great. Long.
Oh no. Sorry, LD. This is what I was afraid of simply because I went through the same exact thing with my son. He was pretty much like, "I'm not stupid and this sh!t is gross. Not drinking it." We ended up having to give him cow milk at 11/11.5 months (cleared by the Ped) because he really would not drink the formula and he needed milk/formula in addition to food still.
I'm not sure I have any other advice but can you still keep trying to mix the two but just not use as much BM? I hear you on how hard it is just throwing it away. That stuff is like gold. Could you do maybe 1 oz BM and a 1/2 oz formula to start? Then if she is still hungry, do another 1oz of BM and 1/2 oz formula and so on? I would keep the BM ratio higher especially in the beginning now. Also trying different brands can't hurt, either.
I hope she eventually takes to it. I know it's super stressful, so good luck!
Yeah I def wouldn't do a straight 50/50 mix just like Val said. I'm sure she'll taste the gross formula right away. Maybe try keeping it to small bottles in the beginning so this way you aren't throwing out 6oz of BM and you're only throwing out 1oz if you have to.
are you giving her the bottles or is big lar?
it might be better if you aren't the one feeding her. joe wouldn't take a bottle for a while if i was in the room.... why should he when he could get it straight from the source? maybe try l feeding l and you head out for a quick walk? that way you are close enough to get home if she really flips but far enough away that she might fall for the whole bottle/formula thing.
he also decided he didn't like frozen bm for a little while, we did the mixing thing and it helped a little. but the best thing for it was for me to be out of the house. he will now take a bottle from me, or if i am home, but he is a pain with frozen when i am around. odd, but whatever.
Ah! You totally just reminded me! I was doing this about 8+ years ago so I forgot. My Ped told me the same thing... to NOT be in the room or anywhere near while DH gave DS the formula. Those babies are like snakes lol... they can SMELL you and as long as they can smell you and even hear you, they'll concentrate on wanting the real thing. Babies are smarter than we think.
My BF was a fail, so my LO has been FF the majority of her life which means my experience with breast milk is very limited (my LO wanted breast milk, just not from the boob). My only suggestion: you said you?re using a sample container, so I?m thinking you?re using powder, right? Maybe it?s the powder itself?
When I was supplementing w/formula, I used ready to feed. When we went strictly to formula, I stuck with RTF (we?ve been using Similac Sensitive). When I tried to switch from RTF to powder, my LO knew it & wouldn?t have it. I tried using the concentrate, still a no-go. LO knew what I was doing & wanted no parts of it. It seemed like no matter how carefully I measured the powder & concentrate, it just wasn?t ?good?. The few times when my LO resigned herself to drinking the powder or concentrate, it seemed like she had some tummy troubles afterward (no matter how carefully I measured). So RTF is where we?re at.
I don?t know how true it is, but a co-worker told me that RTF is easier to digest than powder & concentrate. I swear she also said that the RTF tastes better than powder/concentrate, but I can?t remember.
I?m sorry combo feeding isn?t going smoothly. Good luck!
I also don't have any advice, Claire will eat anything and everything, including prune juice (she's constipated, tmi). She will look at me like "hey this is different, but I'll still eat it"
Good luck, I hated the transition to formula because it was such a shot in the dark.
