  • Thanks! You need to update your pic of L!  I'm sure she looks like a completely different kid by now.

I'm doing well.  Today was a glorious day because I got my staples out, thank GOD!  He did well at his pedi appt but they are a little concerned about his weight loss.  He was down 1lb 1oz when we left the hospital Friday and down another half an ounce as of today.  Turns out we have to put him on a tighter feeding schedule, which is working so far!  Gotta fatten this baby up!

    Thanks for asking!

  • Weight gain or lack of was so stressful. L was also down a full pound when we left the hosp.

Just remember that the pedi's scale is going to be dif from the hospital so that may be why it's off. Also, weigh them with the same exact conditions each time. My pedi weighs with clothes, so I put her in similar clothing each time. If he had a full belly and a diaper on when you weighed him last time, do the same next time. It will allow apples to apples comparison, KWIM?

I'm lazy and I have to update L's picture. Maybe I'll do that today.

  • Getting my staples removed was the most amazing thing.
  • It was tough because we got what seems like conflicting advice all over the place. The nursery nurses said every 4 hours, the LC said every 3 and now the pedi said every 2 from start to start, which makes the most sense to me so that's what we're doing now. I'm just amazed at how much he sleeps! Did you find that your bf attempts in the beginning were in very short intervals? I feel like it should be longer but he will feed for about an average of 15 minutes per feeding every 2 hours before promptly passing out. But he seems content so I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong. I am obviously asking tomorrow at our f/u pedi appt but am curious about others' experiences. And lachute: For. Realz. I felt like a million bucks almost immediately, comparatively at least. Staples are the worst of the worst.
  • I was fortunate not to have any staples or stitches. I think they used dermabond or something. I still got an infection though. It was gross.

Anyway, so the pedi is the right-est. Baby should be nursing about every 2.5-3 hours (at the longest, esp if he needs to gain) from the START of the feeding.

You should be feeding 10-12 times per day.

For me, it took FOR.EV.ER. for her to eat in the beginning. Our sessions were like an hour long and as soon as I was done it felt like it was time to start it again. It was about 1.5 hours from end of one session to beginning of another. I spent like 10-12 hours a day feeding her at first.

No worries though, it gets shorter. I didn't know sometimes if she was sucking for comfort or eating. PS if you feel 'fluttering' of his tongue he's most likely sucking for comfort. This can help build your supply, however, so I never cut it off.

Newborns are very very sleepy. You will have to wake him to eat if he falls asleep while eating. You can do this by stripping him down to the diaper, stopping and burping, using a cold washcloth. One of my nurses told me to tickle in front of her ear or foot. Try not to rub his face as it can stimulate the rooting reflex and he may pull off to try to latch onto you finger.

I also woke her up at night at the instructions of my pedi.Once she was steadily gaining and wanted to sleep longer I let her but in the beginning it was around the clock.

    HTH. You're doing great!
