Anyone ever gotten a raise from unemployment?

Just wondering, if anyone had ever gotten a raise in their weekly unemployment benefits, and if so, how? I'm getting almost nothing right now and can barely afford the gas to go to interviews, much less a daily commute before my first check.

Lost my the week before my wedding when the owner of the company cleaned out the bank accounts (yes, including my last two checks, both ear-marked for the wedding) and moved out of state. We are now trying desperatly to pay off the remaining bills (all should have been taken care of with my last checks) and house bills.

I suppose that doesn't really have any barring on my questions, just still so pissed about it. thanks!

Re: Anyone ever gotten a raise from unemployment?

  • First off that really sucks, is there any legal action being brought against your old employer for not paying everyone?

Sorry but no, that doesn't happen.  Unemployment is based on how much you were making before, there's no way to get a raise.  You should look into seeing if you qualify for food stamps or any other government assistance.  Don't forget you can usually defer student loans, some mortgage lenders & landlords may cut you some slack if you call and explain what's going on and ask for a specific discount or a deferment of payments.  Look over your budget & see what you can cut - cable, eating out, entertainment, clothing are all non-necessities that you can't afford right now.  If you got a part time job would it pay more than unemployment?  If so then start applying for everything you can find ASAP.

What do you mean  when you say "I'm getting almost nothing right now and can barely afford the gas to go to interviews, much less a daily commute before my first check."   Where are you commuting to & do you mean your first unemployment check?

    Sorry that was confusing:)

What I meant was that my unemployment check is just over 100.00 (not a typo) and I live far from a major city or town (where the jobs are) and drive my husbands truck that gets about 4 miles to the gallon. I'm afraid that if I am lucky enough to get offered a position I won't be able to afford the gas to get there until my first paycheck.

I've checked about other assistance, but now that we're married they include my DH income which is JUST enough to make us unqualified. I've also spoken to our landlord and utility companys who are all understanding and have extended our pay timeframe. Thank goodness we were diligent about paying on time all these years!

I really apreciate your response, though. I figured it was a long shot, but I'm grasping at straws. We've been cutting back on everything for more than 6 mos saving for the wedding and now it seems like every solution I come up with has a catch 22 attached.

    Any advice is welcome!

  • Yikes.  My unemployment checks were about $760 every other week (I had been making $38K/year in California when I was laid off).  $100 is crazy.

My husband and I have done some cutting back recently (though I did get a job in June).  We canceled cable, and found that we don't miss it.  Could you do that?  You can always restart at any time.  That is saving us over $50 a month.  While I was unemployed, I made almost all of our meals from scratch (including bread, pizza dough, etc), which took a long time, but saved a lot of money, at least $100 a month.  My husband seems to have a revolving door of eBay stuff...he has tons of bicycle parts around and can always find something to sell.

Good luck...it's so tough out there, and I'm so sorry your previous employer screwed you.  Life is so unfair sometimes.

What period of time does this cover? When did you lose your job and when did you file for unemployment?  Is it possible this is just a partial payment?

and (roughly) how much did you make before losing your job?  That's a factor, too. How long were you employed in the state?
