Help with Organizing - Moving!

Hi, ladies.  I've never been on this particular board, but I just read through some of your posts and responses and would love some advice.

My husband and I are moving out of our apartment and into a house.  The interior of the house actually isn't much bigger than our apartment (both are 2 bed/2 bath), but the house does have a garage (yay!).  It is an older house, though, so what it doesn't have are walk-in closets (which I will miss!), and there are NO drawers in the kitchen (with very limited cabinet and counter space).  I would appreciate some suggestions for what to do with the utensils and other items we would normally keep in drawers.

Should I keep them in something on the counter?  Get some kind of basket/organizer to keep them in the already-minimal cabinet space?  Do you have any specific products you could recommend?

Re: Help with Organizing - Moving!

  • I'm not a norm over here, but I had NO drawers when we moved into our home either.  Until we started getting our cabinets, we just used a couple cute glasses on the counter.  The place I got them from sold out, so I can't show you , but they were just clear glasses with bubbles in it.  Put 3 up there, one for each and a big brick red crock for all the other utensils.

  • Do you have room for a baker's rack?  I'd probably put flatware in some pretty mason jars, larger utensils and servers in a canister/crock of some sort, and stack plates and bowls on there, and save the cabinet space for things that aren't as pretty.

Or, if you have room for something hanging, you could put up a bar with the jars and larger utensils hanging from it.

  • What about a wall rail with hooks or baskets that hang from it?  (check out the wall storage section of the kitchen department from IKEA, for instance)
  • I love looking through the IKEA catalog for small space storage ideas.  Even if you don't end up buying from them, it gets your brain going on what you can do.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!  I appreciate your time.  If anyone else has any thoughts, please share!  :-)
