Can someone explain November Sweeps to me?

I hear the "Sweeps" term a lot, but I am not quite sure what it means.  Anyone care to explain?  Thanks!

Re: Can someone explain November Sweeps to me?

  • It's a period of time especially monitored for ratings. TV shows will roll out their "best" episodes, you'll see more promos for shows and local news "special reports" to entice you to watch.

It's basically a competitive month between networks and local tv stations. Local TV stations use the ratings to help set advertising rates, and find out which demographics are watching certain shows and what times of day.

A lot of new shows debut in September, to get viewers into the story line to keep them tuning in to the November sweeps period. Most shows will also have their season finales in May, another sweeps period, for ratings.

  • Thank You!!
  • there are 4 sweeps periods a year...february, may, july and november.

may and november "count" the most, although there's no real reason why...it's just the way it is.

ratings are also basically crap....but they're the best crap the tv industry has to monitor what people are watching.

and fun fact for the day...if you work in tv news, most stations don't let you take any vacation time during those 4 months.

It's especially awesome when you get to spend Thanksgiving eating turkey at your desk. Stick out tongue

  • I guess I'm lucky bc we take Thanksgiving and the day after out of the book. All hell would break loose if they told the main anchors they couldn't be off on a holiday.

You're very lucky! My ND will probably take the day off, but the rest of us will be there, unfortunately!

ugh, isn't it the WORST?! and there's literally nothing going on, so you run crap stories to fill the show up.
