My fiance and I are moving soon (the end of November) and I would like to know some of your ideas, tips/tricks of starting to pack organized and staying organized in the move process and unpacking. Because I am very unorganized and really lack motivation when it comes to moving! Really need your help!
Re: Moving soon
1. Take this opportunity to purge, purge, purge!
2. There are lots of different methods to pack, but because I'm sort of a visual person and knew exactly where everything was at the old place, I found it most helpful was to pack things together and label according to where they lived at the old place. So, everything on a certain bookshelf went into the same box. That way, if I needed to look for something after moving (before unpacking), then all I needed to do was find the box corresponding to the shelf where it used to live.
3. Also, label boxes on the top AND sides.

I used the colored duct tape method. I picked a color for each room and stuck a piece of tape on each box with the corresponding color. I also have a notebook that i'm keeping moving notes in with sections for each color. So for instance Green is my color for kitchen. I label the first box with the green duct tape Kitchen #1 then in the notebook I write what is in box #1. That way if i'm looking for something specific I know what box i need to open. (I also did it that way so the movers have no idea what's in the boxes). When we move this weekend I plan on hanging a colored piece of that duct tape on the door to the room the boxes belong in so the movers will easily be able to tell what goes where.
In my notebook I also keep lists of To-Do's, people/companies that will need our address change, new purchase wishes, schedules for utilities/movers etc. I like it being all in one place.
In addition to labeling the boxes as far as where they go, I would also put a number on each box, and then keep a notebook listing EVERY item packed in each box number. Unpacking takes longer than you'd think, and if you packed your ice cream scoop under some roasting pan that you only use on holidays, it might be a while before you find it -- unless you've already got a list saying where it is! Just don't pack the notebook!
Start now by packing things you don't use very often or can live without until you move.
