time frame for moving if you have packers & movers

DH's company is paying for the moving company to pack us up and move us.  I'm trying to figure out the time frame since we've never moved this far or had movers before.  We close on a Monday, I'd have to drive back home 6 hours the next day, Wednesday our house could be boxed/packed up, and Thursday the actual move could take place.  Does this time frame sound reasonable?  How long did your move take if you had movers?  Thanks

Re: time frame for moving if you have packers & movers

  • Have the movers come to the house to look around and give you an estimate of how long it will take and when they are available?  Most moving companies will come out first to estimate how long it will take to box up the house.  Alot of times it can take a couple of days depending on how long they work a day and how big your house is.  Our move took two days to pack, three days on the road, and a day to unload (they do not unpack).  They also only pack and move on certain days so we fit around their schedule because our stuff was loaded on a huge semi with other people's stuff as well.  This was a huge moving company and involved a cross country move so if you are moving regionally it might not be that involved.

  • We've moved across the country with a relo package from DH's work as well. They send their moving company over to take inventory of the amount of the stuff to be moved and take into consideration special items (how many beds, tvs, grandfather clock, patio furniture, lawn mower, a swing set, etc).

Some items a second company has to come in and secure/package up for them to move onto the truck (like the grandfather clock and any furniture that needs to be taken apart of the move - the swing set, the baby crib, etc).

Our previous home was 4500 SQFT + outdoor furniture and it took them 2 days to pack and load everything into the tractor trailer semi.
  • We packed all the boxes ourselves, and it still took the movers 8 solid hours to load the truck on moving day. We moved about 6 hours away and we had a 4 day time frame as to when things could be delivered. We ended up being packed up on Tuesday and delivered on Friday.

  • We just moved in August with my DH's job and had packers/movers.  They started packing on Monday.  They continued packing and loading the truck on Tuesday.   They completed packing the truck by 6pm on Tuesday.  We had a 5 hour drive to the new destination.  They delievered on Friday.  Our house was 2600 SF plus finished and furnished basement so we had a lot of stuff.

  • At the time we were moving from a 1000 sqft apt.  The relocation company sent out someone to look at our stuff and estimate how long it would take along with the materials they would need to bring, etc.  They were able to pack us up in one day and had us loaded the next day, which they were done by noon or 1.  They said they could have our stuff to us in I think 3-4 days, but we actually put stuff in storage as we didn't have our new house lined up, so I don't remember exactly how quickly it could have been done.  However, I think it would have been about a week total (packing, loading, driving the truck, and unloading) for a move from NC to FL.

  • Thanks for the responses.  They're coming on Friday to inventory our stuff and I should get an answer after that.  I was thinking it would take 2 days max but it looks like I should expect more, and that's fine.

  • The amount of time it takes depends on lots of factors: size of home; how full the home is; how many items need special consideration or a third party to disassemble; and more importantly ... how large the team is that they send to you. I mean, a team of 6 moves quicker than a team of 4.

    Good luck!
