We need to bring back Topic of the Day posts.

Remember those good, 'ole days?

  • Good "pole" days?Wink
  • I could start talking about how nutso the homeschooling hippies are next door...

usually they just have some social skills issues (home schooled kids, that is). But mine has all kinds of issues. For example, he was betting one of the American girls that she couldn't hang from the tree for x number of seconds, and when she lost, he made her go home and get the dollar she owed him (he's ten). Later that same day, he rang my doorbell because he made a bet with R (who's six) and he won, so he was coming to collect the two dollars that was owed to him. I laughed.

This weekend R wanted to share with me what the worst word ever is. Our neighbor told him, it's like 'duck' but starts with an f instead.

Apparently this child has sugar issues, but I've seen him eat way more desserts and ice cream and etc than I would let any kid have.

He also invited a bunch of kids right off the school bus to his bday party, but told R he wasn't invited. Then later that day, he found out some of the kids couldn't make it to the party, so now R was invited. I told him we would have needed more notice than that and that we were going to a pumpkin patch instead.

How this misconception hasn't died yet is beyond me.  Many actually say it's children who go to "real" school are the ones with the issues.

  • I have yet to meet a home schooled kid who has not fit into the typical stereotype. I worked in a child care facility for six years and they all stood out there. I worked as a tutor in a learning center; they stood out there. I saw two drop out of my college after one semester. I have ever met an adult who told me they were home schooled and it actually surprised me. My usual observation is "they seem nice, but a little weird.". Difficulty interacting with peers, but typically great with adults.
  • I taught 8th grade English for 8 years in a public, suburban school. I, too, held onto the stereotype of homeschooled kids being a little "off' socially or what have you, UNTIL I taught a few previously homeschooled kids who were just awesome students, and this shattered my prior misconceptions. They were intelligent, well-adjusted, and well-liked by both their peers and teachers. I think it's all about the resilliency of the individual kid(s), and the approach of the parents. It was both surprising and refreshing to let go of that stereotype I'd formed.

What were homeschooled students/children doing in a child-care facility?

I dropped out of college, multiple times, and I was schooled by the gubmit, so that argument doesn't hold.  ;)

Regardless, these may be YOUR experiences, but they're not everyone's nor does any study regarding socialization & homeschooling support it.

  • My parents rented our farm house (where we grew up) from some people who homeschooled their children.I had no idea these kids were homeschooled until a few years ago and I had no idea up until then. We playedTogether all the time in the summer as their parents farmed near us. I saw no difference in them versus my friends.

  • The child care center was at a fitness center, like a gym.

I'm glad others have had the home-schooled stereo-type shattered. I'm waiting for it to happen. My opinions are strictly based off of what I've experienced.

I'm certainly not saying that my neighbor kid is a typical home-schooled kid. Betting, swearing, & being disrespectful towards adults are never labels I would think to give a home-schooler!
