We are purchasing my grandmothers home and its fithy. She allowed my aunt, her husband and my other uncle to move in with her and the four of them each smoked a pack a day easily for the last 8 years. The combination of the excessive smoking and the fact that they never really cleaned and had multiple pets has left her home nasty. Long story short after getting them moved out after grandma passed away and gutting out garbage, we have to figure out a place to start cleaning and I need help.
I believe we are going to be replacing the carpeting throughout the upstairs because it is so matted with animal hair and pet stains, I dont want it. Besides replacing the flooring and painting the walls with some Kills based primer I dont know where to begin. Flooring out first, paint first, scrub walls, scrub cabinets or windows... any ideas on getting rid of the smokers smell. Tips appreciated!

This exactly.
Rip it up all the way down to the sub floor and paint the sub floor with Killz primer also.
Have all aid ducts cleaned and change the air filter.
Paint (including the ceiling).
Friends of ours als used ozone machine that somehow filters all the air, but I'm not sure where you get it.
I would probably get rid of the kitchen cabinets too and just got new ones.
rent an ozone machine?
I used to work at an apartment building and used an ozone machine for BAD smells - we called it the dead guy machine, but it worked for getting rid of smoke smell too
