Trying to be professional WWYD?

I think I have made a really big mistake agreeing to take this job at the bank. At first I was told that they would work around Lance's hours, I would be making a 'decent' wage (which I suppose varies on what you consider decent) and that I would probably be working 1 full day every couple of weeks.

Over the past couple of weeks, that has now changed, they are no longer promising that they will only schedule me on Lance's days off, I'm making a really sad, pathetic wage and I'll be working 2 half days a week (4 hours a day).

I live a half hour out of town, so by the time I get to work I'll already have to work a half hour just to make back my money from the trip, that leaves 3.5 hours left per day wage, and if I have to find a sitter, I am quite literally making no money whatsoever.

My new boss called me in to sign some papers (I didn't know about all of the changes to our agreement until then)... I know it is no excuse but she called me in on Friday when I had a turkey in the oven and a house to get ready for what I thought was going to be a great party (ugh), so I wanted to get in and out. When she told me my wage I said 'That is a little lower than I expected' and she said 'maybe, but we could have started you lower and I do have a branch to run'... I then asked if I had time to go home and think about it and she said 'yes, but I am leaving tonight and won't be back until your first day and I was really hoping to get this closed and processed before I leave'... so not wanting to miss my opportunity and wanting to get back home right away I signed the damned thing.

And now I seriously wish I hadn't. I called my Mom and she advised me to try it for a month and then if I'm not making any money to back out and quit because there is no point in having a job if I'm not making money. True enough, but I'm nervous because it is going to take them 2 weeks (full time) to train me, and it seems so unprofessional to up and leave after they've paid me for a job they thought I would stay at... but I also feel unprofessional dropping out now after signing everything.

I think what I am going to do, is start like I planned and tell them straight out that I cannot afford to work when Lance isn't home to watch Wyatt, and if they cannot work with me on that, then I cannot afford to work period. I've never been one to negotiate (obviously) so this makes me nervous. Any advice on what you think I should do?

...wow... sorry that got so long lol. Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Trying to be professional WWYD?

  • Personally, I would call them before starting and discuss your concerns about wage and scedule. As an employer, I would be frustrated to have someone committed to start, have my staff ready to train them, and then within the first week be told "I can't do this unless..." I'm assuming that since you said you will be "in training" for 2 weeks, that they are getting their staff to add in training you to their schedule. I would be ticked as a co-worker if my schedule was altered and then the new employee came in for a few days and told my boss they couldn't work-it's a waste of their time if you won't stay with the job unless they change your pay.

Better to address your concerns prior to starting than take up your time and theirs for days/weeks only to find that they will not increase your pay.

  • I'd call them up and say you were caught off guard with the changes and that you went home and thought about it more and you're not comfortable with the way things are set up. Ask them if they can increase the wage/ schedule you around Lance's days off and if not just say thank you but it's not going to work out.

Better to get it done now than to sit on it.

    I agree with this.

  • Thanks girls! I wish I had just called her Friday afternoon like I wanted to :( I still have to talk to Lance more about it, but I think that would be best.

Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it :)

  • I'm sure if you just explain that you'd rather get it sorted out now than waste anyone's time they will appreciate it.
