A couple PG questions

I found out I'm slightly anemic and they want me to take an iron supplement. My prenatal gummies don't have any iron in them. Any recommendations for something that isn't too harsh on my digestive system/crapping habits?

My back, my aching back. My back is killing me. It's almost a constant pain whether standing, sitting or laying down. I tried a pillow between the legs last night and that made it worse.

Re: A couple PG questions

  • I had to be on an iron supplement with Alex. I just took a generic one pill a day (with orange juice to help absorbtion) and a stool softener chaser.

For the back pain, maybe a belly belt? I've never tried them, but some say they're great. If it's in a specific spot, you can fill a sock with rice and nuke it for a bit to heat it up. At least that's what I learned in a class on Monday. Never tried that one either. I usually sit on an exercise ball when my back gets bad.

  • My back sucks too, Katie. :( I picked up a heating pad the other night.

  • I agree with taking a stool softener w/ the iron.  Don't worry - you'll want/need to have them around post-partum anyway so go ahead and buy some now.  You can thank me later ;)

I don't know what to say about the back - it's really so awful.  I used to have to stand bend over at the waist sometimes just to alleviate the pain/pressure.  A pillow did help me, seems not you.  What about a pre-natal massage.  If you're really in agony I've heard that chiropractic can help - just make sure to work with someone who knows how to work with pregnant women.  I have a few friends who did it and said it worked wonders.  If my back is bad again next time I am definitely going to try it.

  • If you look for something called "gentle iron," it is easier on your system.  I had constipation issues when taking iron (I'm also anemic) and the gentle iron did not constipate me.  I got mine at Meijer.

For your back-- try putting the pillow underneath your belly to support it instead of between your knees.  Might work, might not.

  • I've got nothing on the iron.

For the back, I found that leaning my back against DH at night (or the back of the couch) and then placing a pillow between my belly and mattress helped a lot. (So you're laying on your side/back). I hope you find relief soon, anything that works for you, when you find it will be amazing!!

  • If you take an iron supplement, you may want to add a stool softner with it. My prenatls had iron in them so I didn't need anything else.

Do you have a desk job? My back and shoulders killed me when I was pregnant. I was able to convince them to get me a good chair. I also have something to put my feet up. Putting my feet up while sitting helped so much with my back!

    Oooo, good call.

I got a new work chair when I was PG - milk it Katie, milk it!! I also would prop my feet up on top of my computer tower.

Ha! I may have to try this. Only my tower sits on my desk. I'm not sure how that would look.

I'll definitely look into the stool softener/iron supplement combo.

  • my sIL also says that taking the iron supplement at night can help too with any potential GI issues.

  • I don't have any advice on the iron, but I am right there with you on the back pain.  My back has been killing me lately and seems to be worse when laying down.  I haven't figured out anything yet to make it feel better.  I may dig out the rice heating pad and try that soon.

  • There is a supplement that you can get at Whole Foods called Blood Builders. It's non binding and it worked great for me. Kicked my anemia in the patootie. I had no issues related to it either.

  • I sat on a heating pad every day in 2nd and 3rd tri. I would take it to work sometimes at have it in my chair at my desk. I also too hot baths.

My dr perscribed rx iron for me. Make sure you don't eat milk products within 2 hours of taking it... blocks the absorption.
