Poll: How much do you save?
How much of your monthly take home pay do you save as a family per month after your normal paycheck deductions and 401k, IRA are taken out?
I?m not interested in the 50% or more answers I?d get on MM. I want to know what real people are doing! J

Re: Poll: How much do you save?
Ours is currently about 11% going straight to our joint savings account after every paycheck (a lump sum rather than a certain percentage of each of ours.) This might have to fluctuate a little as DH is starting a new position soon with a paycut.
We rarely touch this money except for major house things (new appliances, etc.) otherwise it just sits there.
We also have money left over at the end of the month but that just sits in our checking account so I wouldn't necessarily call it "savings" but rather "we haven't spent this" money.
I'm a bit of a special snowflake on this one - both DH and I work - but my pay check is 100% banked. We save approximately 5% of DH's paycheck every month - and our 401k, benefits, etc. all come out of DH's paycheck.
To make sure we stay financially sound - we make it a prioroty to only live off the one paycheck.
We usually only dip into my savings if we need something big for the house, or want to take a bigger trip (for example, a Europe trip next year).
That's a great idea! I wish we could do that!
DH and I both work full time, and our expenses are pretty low besides rent, groceries, utilities, one car payment (my hunk of junk is paid off), etc - so we have the luxury of saving a lot. I put almost 50% of my paycheck away each month, and DH does about 1/4 to 1/2 of his - he covers most of the household expenses.
Right now savings is our focus. When we have kids I plan to stay home at least while they are little, and we want to have a nice cushion. We also are trying to get up enough money for a down payment on a house, so save save save!
