How far do you travel for your commute?

I have started applying for jobs now that I graduated and there are not many jobs in my field and I saw a few postings for positions that are somwhat far from my house (30ish miles each way-about a 1 hour drive).

Just curious to know how far others commute to work.

Re: How far do you travel for your commute?

  • About 8 miles/20 minutes. Prior to moving to our house, I was commuting 18 miles which took almost an hour via backroads (and longer on Fridays).

  • With picking up and dropping of the baby at the babysitter, I'm at an hour each way.  It's long, but doable.
  • 11 miles/35-50 min

  • 4ish miles and about 15 minutes.  It used to be 18 miles and about 45 minutes before I moved in with DH.  My old job was 12 miles but more than an hour...that sucked.

  • 1 hour and 20 minutes, each way.  Drive 9 miles to the train station, wait for train/ride into the city on an express for about 40 minutes. Walk 5 blocks to the office.

The husband walks 2 blocks to work.  Lucky duck!

  • My old commute was just under an hour each direction but it wasnt so bad because it was on transit so it was semi-relaxing. My new commute is about 20 minutes which is wonderful but its in a car which I hate.

  • 40 miles - about 1 hour 20 min. each way. DH and I carpool, so he drives to work and I drive home from work.

  • Generally 40min-1 hour, depending on traffic.

FI has an 1hr + commute each way on the train.

    I was Beagle211
  • 36 miles one way and anywhere from an hour to 4 hours commute depending if people decide to get into an accident, if they are paving the roads, if it's Christmas/Holiday season or not. It's just about 1 hour to get to this wasteland in the morning and a solid 1.5 hours to get home.

I will say that this commute is taking years off my life and I'm being serious. It's been 5 years now and I can't do it for much longer. Once I get my bonus in March, I'm out and am looking closer to home.

  • Currently 10ish miles and 20-25 minutes. If we move we're where trying to move, it will go to 20 something miles and about 45 minutes.
  • 2.5 miles-8 min with no traffic, 15 with traffic.

25 if I stop at Starbucks on the way in...

When I lived in Media, it was 12 miles and took me 45 min with stop and go traffic. It also drove me nuts since I drive a stick shift and there is nothing worse than a stick shift in traffic. When we were looking to buy, we purposely looked for homes that were close to where I work. I love being so close to home and being able to run home during lunch if I need to. I know, I'm spoiled!

i was hoping you'd post on this! while you're commute fb status updates are sometimes hysterical, they also help me realize my 45-75 minute 40 mile drive aint so bad and i need to stop b!tching about it.

    DH works from home . . . .

Yes, def. horrible with a stick shift. Some days it takes me over 40 minutes to make it 3... THREE!... miles down Rt.1.

There have been 2 times when it took me 6+ hours to get home after work. The first time was during a snow storm about 4 winters ago. The second 6+ hour commute home was when I guy decided to park his car on the shoulder of I-95, got out of his car and then ran out in front of an 18 wheeler flying down the highway. Needless to say, his suicide attempt was successful. Oh and then there was the time that someone jumped off of the overpass on Rt.1 and got killed by another 18 wheeler flying down rt. 1. That was a 4 hour commute.

I try to remind myself all the time that lots of people commute further than I do and are in their cars for longer than I am but damn, it still sucks.

  • I'm like 5 miles, 15 minutes. Daycare is on the way but has added about 10 minutes. I've worked within 6 miles of both of the last jobs I've had. Our office is moving in the spring and will double my commute. I'm slightly irritated but I know it could be waaaay worse.

  • I'm 2.8 miles from work and it takes about 15-20 minutes.   I wish I could take public transit because there is a bus stop at the end of my block, but I would be looking at a good hour or so and have to change bus for subway.  So it's easier to drive.

haha - sorry!  Like I said, it used to be 12 miles and an hour+ to get to my old job - all traffic lights up and down City Line Ave.  And it was really the fastest way to get there!

  • I'm a little under an hour door-to-door. I walk 0.5 mi. to the train, ride the train for 30 mins (I love it b/c I can relax and read!), then I walk about 5 blocks to the office.

Its not bad at all. If I were driving for that hour, I'd go nuts.
