topic #3 - fat tax

1. Should there be a tax on fatty foods?

2. Should welfare/food stamp recipients be only allowed access to healthy foods?

    1. Should there be a tax on fatty foods?

No, that wouldn't solve any problem.

    2. Should welfare/food stamp recipients be only allowed access to healthy foods?

No, healthy foods cost a lot more than non-healthy food.  The money they receive wouldn't go as far, we would have to increase the amount of assistance they get, and that would cause more problems.

  • No, I don't think that would solve the problem.  There would have to be a separate tax on soda, beer, everything that's "unhealthy."  I do think breaks should be given to those who eat healthier and show they take care of themselves.  How would that work? I have NO idea!

Um...I'd like to say yes but healthy food is so much more expensive.  I do think they should be limited on the crap they are allowed to buy though.  I think a point system or something should be instituted.  Candy costs more points than bananas or something like that. Encourage people to eat better (with splurges obviously) by making their dollar go further.  Then again, people on welfare aren't the only ones buying shyt so changes need to be made across the board for the health of this country.

    1. Should there be a tax on fatty foods?

Sure...Just like the taxes on cigarettes and liquor it isn't going to stop the people that really want these things from buying them.  It would generate more tax dollars and *maybe* make people second think their food choices.

    2. Should welfare/food stamp recipients be only allowed access to healthy foods?

Yes.  I work for a community action agency and within our agency we house a WIC program for NE Nebraska.  I work in the fiscal office so I don't know all the ins and outs of the WIC program but I do know that the clients are given checks for certain foods (milk, whole wheat bread, beans, peanut butter, fresh produce.etc) I realize that WIC is a supplemental program for our clients but I personally prefer this compared to a food stamp card that can purchase chips, pop, candy, crap, crap, crap!!!

Sure!  I really see no reason not to have one.

    2. Should welfare/food stamp recipients be only allowed access to healthy foods?

It all needs reformed.  But I don't think we'll see it in our lifetime.

I completely agree with the way WIC is administered.  It's much better than our current foods stamp system.

    1. Should there be a tax on fatty foods?

Absolutely not.  Who gets to decide which fatty foods are unhealthy?  For example, my family goes through a LOT of beef, olives, peanut butter, oils, whole milk, etc.  And we're way more healthy now than when we were eating processed, low-fat junk.  Just because something is fatty does not make it inherently unhealthy.  Natural fats are necessary, yo!

    2. Should welfare/food stamp recipients be only allowed access to healthy foods?

Again, who decides what is healthy?  Another personal example:  I eat zero dairy, grains, soy, tomato, etc.  All "healthy" foods per the gov't.  But they all make me incredibly sick.  A crumb of "healthy" whole wheat bread or a drop of milk would take me out for at least a week.  Without these things (and more) in my diet, I'm the healthiest I've ever been.  I'm sure the amount of fatty beef and skin-on chicken I eat in a week would make the "officials" gasp, but you know what?  What works for one body isn't what works for every body.

On both these questions, though, I would say that any food with more than 3-4 ingredients is generally crap.  If there were to be taxes or welfare restrictions, it should be on that kind of thing.  Processed food with a long list of ingredients.  But then you're hurting those businesses, which employ people, so...

    1. I don't think that will change things. We all still eat out even though there is an extra food tax.

    2. Maybe for certain things. The problem goes back to this. They pay for their food with the food stamps then use their money for their booze, cigs, caddy's and flat screen tvs.....  And I know this doesn't pertain to everyone on welfare but it does pertain to certain areas of cities and this is what is wrong with our system. Have more kids, get more help. No social responsibility.
