An Agent to look at Rentals?

Is it standard that you now need a real estate agent to look at rental properties now? We just moved to Chicago. Despite contacting agents regarding their rentals that I found online, they never get back to me directly until its too late/rented. However, if we have a friend, who is an agent, contact them they do show us the place in a timely manner.

We did not have this problem in DC or Denver when we rented there. Just wondering if this is a new policy to me or possibly a regional thing?

(I guess I feel guilt contacting our agent to keep showing us properties when we aren't buying anything...?)

Thanks!

Re: An Agent to look at Rentals?

  • That's not the norm in my area. I own a rental property, and I've never been contacted by an agent to schedule viewings.

  • When DH relocated after college for his job, his company provided him with an agent to look at rentals.  The agent was really flaky and we found a place without her, so she wasn't involved since she wouldn't have gotten the commission.  I don't think it is normal for people who are looking for rentals to have an agent but I know that it is sometimes offered as part of a relocation package.

  • I think this is a regional thing. I know where we live, you don't need an agent, but my cousin in NYC did.
    Life is good today.
  • I think it depends on region. Also on what you are looking for. We moved from east coast to IA ... there is not a big market for renting here (especially nicer homes) and we needed a temp. (15 mo rental) rental that was nice. We used a REA and the home we ended up renting was actually on the market for sale but sales are taking a while here so it worked out for us.
  • Yes, I am in Chicago and we used a realtor to find our last place.  Before that we used an apartment finding agency.  You can find rentals online at places like domo or craigslist too.  Many of the realtor websites have a rental option you can search from.  I believe @properties, Koenig & Strey, and Baird & Warner all do.
