What to buy a 9 year old?

Help!  My H's BFF is flying into town this weekend with his daughter who will be turning 9 years old.  I am planning on throwing her a small birthday party but I have no clue what to buy her.  The last time I saw this girl was at my wedding.....like 4 years ago.

I tried emailing and calling the dad to get an idea of what she might like but he hasn't responded.  I am going to Corpus today (an hour drive) to go shopping and I would really like to pick her up a gift while I am here.  The piece of crap town I live in only has Walmart to shop at.

Do 9 years olds like Justin Bieber?  That's all I got, LOL.  I assume toys are no longer cool at that age?

Any input is appreciated :)

  • My neice is 11 and she is into clothes and accesories, especially headbands.  She still likes Justin Beiber too.  I don't think there is a girl of any age who wouldn't appreciate a fluffy stuffed animal though, but maybe that's just me.

  • I'd stay clear of Beiber. Some girls love him & some hate him. Maybe you could find a lip gloss kit. Or maybe a jewelry making kit?

  • Last year for Christmas, for my close friend's 10 year old, I wanted to get her a gift that was more grown up than little kid, but not quite teen appropriate. I ended up with a thing of toiletries that had shower gel, lotion, body spray, etc. and it was very girly but not little girly. Her mom said it was perfect, because she was really into that sort of thing.  I also found some design your own ring thing at Michael's, (basically a jewelry making kit like Jen suggested). And I bought her a few pairs of cute, funky socks.

  • Yeah I agree with the jewelry making thing.  I was super in to crafts when I was growing up - I think it's a great in between ages gift because it's not too young but not too grown up.  I get my friends' kids stuff like that all the time and they like it.
  • Ditto on all PP.  The kids in my class are 8-9.  A lot of them are starting to get into "big girl" stuff like lip gloss, nail polish, cute headbands, necklaces, etc.  Have fun shopping!

  • Thanks everyone!!  I wasn't able to go shopping today but now I have plenty of great ideas when I go tomorrow  :)
