Re: Poconos rentals
The Pokes!
I can tell you a bit about the area cause I grew up around there and I just did a girls weekend with my college ladies last winter at Big Boulder. I made all of the arrangements and we rented a really nice townhouse through vrbo.com or vacationrentals.com. I forget which one. It was a blast and if it wasn't for one of our girls moving to Florida and offering to host us down there, we would probably be going back this year. I can totally look it up for you and give you the information for the owner. He was really great and the house slept 10-12, I believe. It was 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a gas fireplace. The townhouse was completely brand new - jacuzzi tub, granite countertops, and all of the furniture was in mint condition. There was also an unfinished basement and they had an old school nintendo or sega down there, pool, and foosball tables. We didn't hang out down there because it was a little chilly, plus we were more interested in sitting by the fire and drinking :-). There was also a deck and it overlooked the slopes. Sooo pretty at night. To get to Big Boulder, we just had to hop in the car and drive like 2 minutes. We probably could have walked but it would have been up and down a big hill.
So the Poconos is a pretty large area with lots of small towns so you'll want to start your search based on what you want to get out of the trip. Are you just looking for a place to party with good nightlife? Do you want to ski/snowboard/tubing? Go outlet shopping? Casino? That's pretty much it up there unless you stay somewhere like Skytop Lodge where they have more winter activities but that place can get pricey. But it sounds like you are looking for a rental, not a resort. The resorts also have entertainment but I'm not sure how good it is unless you stay somewhere like Cove Haven or Pocono Palace and those are couples resorts (this is where the champagne glass tubs come into play!)
We decided on Big Boulder because if we did ski (which we didn't) you could ski at both Jack Frost and Big Boulder with the same pass. We ended up just tubing and their tubing and lifts are really good. We liked the location - it was easy to get to off of the turnpike for all of us coming in from different directions. There isn't much in town at ALL, in fact, we tried to arrange for a cab one night to get us to and from the bar, but no cabs service the area. We found this restaurant/bar called Shenanigans just a mile down the road and it was like we had died and went to heaven. It was a local bar, but catered to the ski/snowboard weekend crowd so they had karaoke, a live band, and even a nightclub with a DJ (complete with fist pumping). Umm, it was super weird and poconos - but so amazing and hilarious at the same time. It's impossible to not have fun there! I would go back in a heartbeat.
If you want to do Mount Airy Casino, Spa, or Outlets, they are a little bit of a drive from Big Boulder but nothing more than 20-25 minutes I believe. Once I found that Big Boulder had some of the nicest-looking rentals around, plus had lots of things in close proximity, I gave up on the ski chalets in little towns. I was open to Camelback or Shawnee Mountains too, but most of the stuff I was finding there looked like Grandma's house or had a hot tub from 1984. The only prob about Big Boulder is that we had to run to a grocery store and it was 30 minutes away.
Anyway, I absolutely loved our house and trip. If I were you, I'd start by looking on vrbo.com and vacationrentals.com and see what you come up with. There's lots of little towns and it can get confusing, but stick with the ones with the most properties. Most likely, those are the ones that are communities closest to the major mountains. GL - I'll dig up the contact info for the condo we rented.
Edit: If you're looking for Big Boulder, you have to search Lake Harmony on those websites. HTH! Here's a link to the place we stayed - http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/36108.html?promoType=none
Thanks so much! I really appreciate all your insight!
We found a place in Bushkill- a little more secluded, but we're mainly just wanting to stay in, drink and use the hot tub!
Thanks again!!
