questions about weaning

DD was EBF until one year and then we started whole milk.  It took her a few weeks to warm up to it, but now she is ok, though still doesn't drink much every day, a few ounces at most.  but she eats a lot of yogurt and cheese, so i think she's ok.

So originally, I fed her 4 times a day (when she woke up, after both naps and before bed) and then pumped once before I went to bed.  So far, I've dropped feeding after the afternoon nap and give her whole milk and a snack instead.  I really want to drop the pumping session before bed because I have a freezer stash that I don't think we'll be able to use (she just isn't interested in oatmeal with it anymore and we've basically dropped bottles entirely).  If I drop it, will it affect my morning supply?  That's my biggest concern.   How long did it take you to wean, start to finish?  My goal was by New Years, but we are also moving out of town and I've read it's better not to wean when there's a major change going on like that....

Thoughts? Suggestions?  :)

Re: questions about weaning

  • If you drop the evening nursing/pumping, you'll actually have more milk in the morning and then your body will level out to the next schedule pretty quickly.

With DS#1, weaning took a few months following the "don't offer, don't refuse" method.

With #2, he self weaned and it was almost over night.

  • Just drop the pumping session and don't worry about it. I think it will be fine like rayskit said.

I weaned DD in about a month around 17mo. She was down to 3x a day then. It was a little hard because I was pushing to wean her pretty quickly.

DS isn't weaned yet. I've gone out of town for 3 days - no nursing, no pumping - and he picked right back up where he left off. I haven't pumped since he was 11mo and he hasn't had a bottle in about 6mo. We've been at don't offer, don't refuse for pretty much the last year. I don't think this kid is going to self-wean.
