Dexter... show vs books?

LOVE the series and thinking about reading the books... has anyone read them? How different from the tv series are they? If I read the books will it take away my enjoyment of the show?

Re: Dexter... show vs books?

  • I was having a conversation about this the other day with my boss.

What I gathered from him is that the show has really deviated from the books. I take it to be like True Blood. The show kinda/sorta follows the books and the basic bones are the same (same overall plot) but everything else has been changed to suit television better

  • i didnt even know there were books!
  • I read the books a few years ago.  The first book was followed almost 100%, but then after that, they deviated.  There is a character who is around now who was killed off in the books, for example.

No way! Ugh... I wonder reading the books would ruin the TV show for me. Hmm

  • I didn't realize there were books either! if you have read them do you recommend them? I need something new to read

The books are so good! The plots and story lines are quite a bit different so it wouldn't ruin the show for you.

  • Oh, and in the reverse, there was a character killed off on the show who wasn't killed off in the books, but was severly wounded to the point he/she is now handicapped.

JUst a little teaser for you... ;)

  • I read the first book last year. And yea SOME things were followed in the first book but many of people's looks/storylines were changed. And someone important dies in the first.

  • Oh my... okay... all this suspension now of who died/is handicapped, etc, is making me want to read it! HAHA, thanks ladies!

  • I haven't personally read the books, but I have heard that the show is pretty drastically different from the books.
  • I only read the first book, it was just all right. Personally, I didn't find the writer's writing very strong or compelling. It was pretty similar to the first season except for the ending. The show is much better IMO :)

    Yep!!

I enjoyed the books but agree with the poster who said that the show is better.

  • The show is definitely a MILLION times better!
