tell me about your washer

Our town is offering a fantastic rebate program right now for Energy Star washing machines, so we are seriously considering getting a new one. We are looking to stay under $600 and I would prefer a high efficiency one. I was leaning more towards a top-loading HE washer because I have heard a few complaints from people with front loaders (not drying out and mildew problems) but I don't really know enough to decided. Plus I cannot make decisions on my own and every time I say something DH just answers with "Yup or Sure".

So, any recommendations or reviews on your washers?

Re: tell me about your washer

  • I've never had a problem with my front loader not drying out. I'm assuming that the people who do don't leave their door open a crack when the machine is not in use. I know my mom's manual actual told her that it should be left open a crack if it wasn't in use so it could dry out. As a result I've always left it open a crack.

I have a Samsung and am really happy with it. My mom has a Bosch and loves it.

  • We have a whirlpool top loader he washer (and matching dryer).  It works great, and I love that I can fit a ton in it!

  • We have the Whirlpool Duet Steam (both the washer and dryer) and LOVE them! Washer is a front loader, and we've had no problems. As Alise said, you need to leave the door open when not in use. And, ours has a "clean washer" cycle which we run once a month, as recommended.

This is my washer and we have the matching dryer as well.  It's a Whirlpool HE Cabrio.  I absolutely love it.

  • We have a whirlpool duet washer and dryer and I have nothing good to say about either. When they are not broken, they work really well. However, we have had over $900 in repairs for the washer in under 2 years and the dryer had to be replaced 6 weeks after we got it. The techs in both VT and here in NE have had nothing good to say about them-apparently they regularly need massive repairs (ours were bearing and water pump replacement) and break down way earlier than they should. My IL's got us the set for our wedding becuase they have had a duet set since 2005 and they run like new. From what I have heard, the duet sets of "old' work really well, the newer ones suck.

Huh, that's really interesting. We got our set in 2008, and have not had one problem (knocking on wood, as I have them both running right now).

  • I can never remember what mine is. (not much help, huh?) My MIL gave her front load to me when we got married since she was up-grading. I like the front load look best, but I will say that from what I understand and have seen, front loads tend to have a shorter life span that top loads. My dad got about 10 years out of his front load, where his old top load was 15 or so years before it died.

Also keep in mind that with the spin cycles of a front load you can get a lot of shaking and vibrations unless the front load is on a cement slab (say the research I've done). We have a big problem with vibrations, shaking, and rattling (think jet engine starting) from ours. There's really not much I can do about it other than not load it full.

  • Also, I know a lot of stores will "run" the machine just to show you how it "works" if they have a display model.

  • We just bought our washer and dryer last week so I haven't used it much but I love it so far.

It's an LG HE top load washer with the matching dryer. It has every option I could ever need plus more and they are the quietest machines I've ever had. We opted for the top load HE washer just for back issues. I feel like even with the pedastals for the front loaders, that it would eventually be hard on my back, but that's just personal choice obviously.

The washer model number is WT5001CW and the electric dryer model number is DLE5001W in case you would like to look up other reviews.

They were more than we wanted to spend but we got a great deal at Best Buy and I'm hoping we won't have any problems with them for many years.

    Good luck!

  • We have a Kenmore 800 series top loading energy star washer. I like it but if I had the budget to get the front loader I would have. My washer picks the water level like the front loader and that is my main problem with my washer. I often have to do an extra rinse, also sometimes the clothes are relatively dry at the end of the wash. Other than that I've liked it. Our dryer is the 600 series and I love it. We went with kenmore because that is what my Mom and Grandma use. We have had zero problems (so far). We bought them in either august or September 2009.
