Thoughts on older people driving...

How do you feel about older people driving?

I was driving down a side street today, speed limit 30 MPH.  This guy was doing 15.  Fine - really slow but not putting anyone in danger.  Then he gets to the end of the road and going to turn onto a main road, 4 lanes and a turning lane.  He has NO directional so I don't know if he's going left or right.  He waits and waits for a few MINUTES and then turns left, almost having 2 cars hit him coming from the left AND a car in the turning lane almost hit him too.  Then he proceeds to go into the far right lane and almost hits another car.  If ANY of these drivers weren't paying attention they would have hit this guy.  I think that older people should have to renew their license, take the test again or something, to make sure they are still good drivers.  This guy could have hurt him, his passenger or numerous other drivers today.

  • And NY is no longer requiring the eye exam so that sure as hell isn't going to help anything.

  • Yeah I heard that on the news.
  • My personal opinion is that EVERYONE should have to retest when they renew their license, or at least renew in person.  I know that there are a lot of emotional ties to driving and valuing independence, and that can make it tough for families to take away the keys when someone clearly is not fit to drive anymore.  I know that in Rochester, public transportation quite frankly sucks.  I can't imagine not having a car here.  But if I was unable to drive safely, I would hope that someone would take the keys away and prevent me from harming anyone else.

  • I am always swearing at the old people on the road - they drive me crazy and I agree with making people re-take their test at a certain age as well.. maybe in their 70's???
  • I just heard on the news this morning there were 4 accidents in the last week in the Buffalo area, all of which involved old people mistaking the gas for the brake.  They hit a Wendy's, a natural gas line (at a rest stop on the Thruway), a bank, and a store.  I really think we need to retest and I think 70 is probably a good age to start.

  • There is an old guy who lives somewhere near me and goes somewhere near Ty's preschool a couple times a week, and he leaves around the same time as me.  I HATE getting behind this guy.  It is a 4-5 mile stretch of road, speed limit is anywhere from 30-45 mph, 6 traffic lights and no where to pass.  This guy goes 20 mph the entire way!  He also slows to a stop at every traffic light regardless the color, and he starts slowing as soon as he sees the light.  Takes a trip that normally takes 10 minutes and makes it 25 minutes making us late for school.  He ends up with the longest line of cars behind him!

My grandmother actually did this (several years ago).  She drove into my parents garage and crunched the door pretty good.  My dad finally took the keys after that.

I absolutely think people should have to re-test at some point... not sure what age though.  There are lots of unsafe drivers (old and young) out there.
