I'm hung up on the name Eliza right now.
Niece is Elizabeth. She goes by Elizabeth and mom wants her to be called Elizabeth. Obvs, pronunciation is different, but first five letters are the same. Would this bother you?
Re: baby name question
If you asked the mother, would she give you an honest answer? How often do you see them?
I'm not sure if that would bother me.
I see them as two totally separate names. In fact, I think there are other names that have nothing to do with Elizabeth that are closer sounding (like Alyssa).
FWIW I really like it and IMO it is cuter and easier to say and remember than Elodie (although that's a nice name too.)
Cut the Crap - Weight loss journey of a Few Fat Chicks
I know someone with that name, but she spells it Aliza. That only makes it 4 letters in common =P
But to answer your original question, no, that would not bother me. Elizabeth and Eliza are two completely different names to me.
Yeah, Elodie is on the short list but it's not going to make the cut. I like it still, but I'm not sure it's the right fit for us.
I really really like Eliza. Very pretty.
I have the same question as Jill...could you ask the mom if it would bother her to have a somewhat similar name?
FWIW, I think of them as two completely different names and unless they are written side-by-side then I would even think twice about them being similar.
Very cute. I also know an Eliza and never ever thought if it being "Elizabeth". I see them as different sounding, even though they look similar.
Kind of like Alexa or Alexis. I don't think of them as being Alexandra, though they look very similar (and even sound more similar than Eliza and Elizabeth). The "liz" sound really is very different.
It would bother me, but we are very close to my nieces and live about 10 minutes away.
Ex: my niece is Ella. I SO wanted to use a name with Ella in it but I know that Ella will be the nn, so it got vetoed.
I'd just ask the mom if it bothers her and if not, go with it since the pronunciations are different.
Our crazy, wonderful life
I think running the name by the parents of the other kid is a courtesy gesture. In the end, yes, the parents are the ones with the final say of the name, but with a similar name, it would be nice to at least run the name by them. I was considering using the name Briana at one point, and asked my brother and his wife if they would mind because his name is Brian. It's a different name, different pronounciation, but still very similar. Another SIL recently ran the name Alexander James T by H and I as a potential name for their son. I was, and am, a bit annoyed by this, not flattered, but in the end I know it's their choice. I liked having a heads up that the name similarity could be happening. I'd feel blindsided if I showed up at the hospital and they then told us the similar name to our Alex.
Everytime I see this I shake my head. Normally I'm all about 'name your kid what you want' but this is FAMILY and "Alexander James" is practically exactly the same as "Alexandra Jane". I mean, certainly a different middle name is easy for them to choose but even still I'm sure both kids will be called "Alex" which makes it.......the same name. It just.......I don't get it.
It's like my brother saying he was naming his son "James Bernard" or something - though Bernard is even more different than Beatrice that James/Jane are.
*Shakes head and shrugs*
I see your point. Maybe once I have my own kids I'll soften up
