Baby Food

For those of you that make your own: Do you have a Baby Breeza or a Babycook? Do you like it? If not, what do you use? I don't have a food processor and my blender needs to retire, so I am open to suggestions. I do like the idea of steaming/blending with the same appliance, but curious to hear if it's worth it. Also, what to you make, how much at a time and what do you store it in? Any recipe suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Baby Food

  • Kitchenaid Food Processor. The baby food cookers just didn't make enough at one time for me to commit to one. I used my food processor, a steamer basket (ours is from Williams Sonoma, but you can get them anywhere), and ice cube trays. For fruits/veggies that I knew he would like, I would make 2-3 ice cube trays full (about 2ish lbs of apples  for example), for the first time of a food, just one ice cube tray. After the food was frozen I would store it in ziploc freezer bags until needed.

  • My Cuisinart Food Processor :)  It worked great for making all of Mara's baby food!

  • I just use my kitchen food processor as well and freeze in ice cube trays and freeze in ziploc bags.  I have baked my peaches, sweet poatoes, squash, etc. so far and then just put in the food processor- very easy.  I use the wholesomebabyfood website that was recommended on here for instructions

Ditto.  If the specialty products were bigger they could be a good investment but they are just so small.  Like indomestic, I made a TON of the foods I knew he liked.  Even after he was on more table food he still liked applesauce and fruit purees.  I also made smoothies for myself so any extra I had never went to waste.

  • I have a Magic Bullet.  I love it.  It is smaller, but if I don't have time to freeze the stuff right away it comes with lid for each container that you can just stick in the fridge.

I use ice cube trays to freeze and once it's frozen I put it in ziplock bags.  To make things easier for myself in the morning I have been individually bagging one days portion of food.  I mix up what I put in each baggie and label what it is.  I just have our daycare keep it in the freezer so it doesn't all melt into one.

I buy anything I can that is already frozen - most veggies and fruits you can get this way.  I steam them and them put them in the bullet.  I have even done macaroni and cheese this way too.   Sweet potatoes and squash I buy fresh.  I just cut them in half, leave the skin on and bake them.  When they are done the skin peels of real easy.  Bananas I cut into cubes and freeze.  I don't put these in the bullet because it gets too runny, I use this instead.  Some of the stuff you will have to add water/formula/BM to make it thinner.

I think it is totally worth it IMO.  First because you know exactly what your baby is eating.  Second because it is SOO much cheaper.  You can buy a bag of peas for $0.99 that will make two trays of food ( 1 weeks worth) compared to two containers for $0.99.  It really doesn't that much time, I'm often doing other stuff while I am making all the food.

This website is really helpful too.  http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/

  • I have also done turkey & chicken, but I haven't perfected that yet.  It still comes out pretty gritty, but M still eats it.
  • My mom bought us a new food processor knowing we were going to be making baby food and our blender sucks. She bought us the hamilton beach one from Target I think it runs on sale for 29 or 39. LOVE IT! Cord stores inside of it as does the lid and 2 attachments. So far I have used it for salsa, chucky or thinned, shredded cheese....Lyra's beginner foods which were thinned down. Just yesterday I used it for zuchinni and made it a little thicker for her as we are heading into the next stage. And just so you know my mom does a TON of research before buying these type of items and she has one just like it.

As for recipes I bought Tyler Florence's new cook book for baby food and am loving it. It doesn't have a ton of recipes but I like his combo ideas and meal ideas for when they actually start eating table foods. The meals look yummy for the whole family.  Lyra will eat anything. I think we've tried almost every veggie the store has to offer. Including things that dh and I don't even eat on a regular basis.  Other than that I just use that baby food website everyone posts about.

  • I knew they looked too good to be true :) Thanks, ladies. I will look at food processors while I wait for my plane. I have been on a work trip for 6 days and plan to start reintroducing fruits & veggies this weekend to try and isolate the allergy I posted about last week. Can't wait to get home!
