cleaning people

If you have people, do you give them a key? how does this work?

Re: cleaning people

  • When my parents had a cleaning lady... yes, they had a key.

  • When I was looking, it depended on the company.

Some companies have a lock box where they keep everyone's key and hand out the keys for that day to the person coming.

Some companies were ok with being told where the key would be for that day so each "crew" could let themselves in.

I guess if you are going with an individual it would depend on your comfort level with them and/or your neighborhood.

  • My ILs have one - they have a code on their garage so she lets herself in that way. But I imagine otherwise she'd have a key.

As an aside you can get those new doors that have codes not keys and you could program a code just for the cleaning lady. Then if you fire her, you delete that code so she can't get in again. You can do the same with your alarm...we never even changed the locks on our doors (bad, I know) because we figure if for some odd reason the sellers still had a key and decided to let themselves in, they would not be able to disarm the alarm as it has our own code and they never used the system anyway.

  • We already changed the locks. This came up b/c we are considering giving the floor guy a key while we're gone to refinish the floors and my dad is freaking out about it.

"he'll make a copy and rob you later"

I didn't mention i am more or less begging chris to get a housekeeper monthly and i assumed we'd give them a key! My mom used to have someone come once/mo and always took the morning off. um, no.

Eta: chris did tell my dad we'll have an alarm when we move in anyway, but he's still going on about it. he's, um, neurotic about safety.

  • Our (temporary, I only get one more cleaning before we move) cleaning lady does have a key.  DH gave it to her when she came and did the initial estimate.

  • when we had our floors done, we let them in but then just asked them to lock up when they left.

  • With the floor guy, I would be fine with giving him the key as long as his references all checked out and he didn't have anything bad on BBB.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel. As long as the person has a good rep, I'd be ok with it. We go home to let our bug guy in once every 3 months, but it's only every 3 months and he's there for 20 minutes tops (easy for me since I'm 5 minutes from home now).

  • yeah, we got him from Service Magic so its like extra screening too. My mom might go let him in Thurs/Fri but if the job goes beyond that my dad would need to do it (since my mom is going away too). We'll see. I'm not really all that worried about it.
  • my parents have had cleaning ladies for years - they always have a key.

we had our floors done a few months ago and we gave him a key - we couldn't stay at the house, so there wasn't really any way for us to let them in every morning and to lock up every night.  It was a 4 or 5 day process
