Any recs for mold specialists and people to do a driveway? And question about regrading.

We had an inspection on a house today and there is some mold in the basement and family room that the inspector thinks is likely due to a combination of poor house maitenance (gutters never cleaned) and grading issues.  He didn't think a mold specialist was necessary and that topical treatments would be sufficient, but DH and I are considering trying to get someone in.

The driveway will need to be taken out and a new one put in.  The houe is a SS so there will be no getting money from the sellers to fix this, or getting them to fix it on their own so we're interested in trying to figure out if we could get some estimates to have a feel for what this would cost.  Any recs for companies to do this?

Finally, the house needs to be regraded but inspector said this could be a DIY.  Has anyone done this or hired someone to do this?  Any recs for names or ideas on cost?

Thanks a lot!

  • No recs here - but, I missed your post about finding something!  congrats...  where did you decide to buy?  Olney?
  • Thanks!!  The house is in Brookeville which I think is pretty much Olney.  We love the house and overall the inspector said it's in really good shape but the current homeowners just didn't stick to good house maintenance

  • Congrats on finding something you like!

How severe is the grading issue?  We built our house in CT and the builder did not follow the grading plan so water was pooling against the foundation - luckily the day we closed was torrential rain and we were able to find out about the issue immediately.  Their solution instead of regrading was to install french drains on each side of the house that drained out to the road and it worked like a charm.  We were there for two years and never had any issue with it again.  The builder took care of it as it was his issue, but my understanding is that if we did it ourselves, it would have cost about $1-2K (to hire someone, that is).

  • Unfortuatnely I wasn't at the inspection, DH was, so I Don't know for sure how severe the grading issue is but the way the inspector described it and translated by DH makes me think it's not that bad-he said we can DIY by simply laying down some sort of dirt/clay to redirect the slope.  I don't think we'd be agains the french drains though-thank you

  • I just had our community's parking lot repaved and got several bids and the least expensive was H&H paving (http://www.hhpaving.com/about.htm).  They were so nice and very knowledgeable and did a good job.  If they ask, tell them Lisa from Jackson Court referred you.  We developed quite a bond when my jacka$$ property management company failed to have a check ready for them and then refused to pay them and we almost got in a law suit.  Thankfully I only have 2 more months to be the HOA President and I have learned my lesson never to take on that task again!
