Anyone been? Next year my step-dad is turning 60. My mom is planning a big family vacation for over 4th of July. She just sent me an email asking what I thought of going to Bar Harbor. I figured one of you NE ladies have been! She is wanting to rent a house for all of us to stay. There will be 8 adults and 3 kids (ages 6, 3, and 2). Are there things to do with kids and still entertain the adults? What are your overall opinions of it? Is it really touristy? Crazy busy over the 4th? Thanks!
Re: Bar Harbor, ME
I live 45 minutes from there and LOVE Bar Harbor! Yes, it's very touristy (popular location), so I can imagine lots of people will be around on the 4th of July. If you rent a house that has a pool though, you can spend time relaxing there and enjoying the ocean air!
There's a downtown area where there are tons of unique shops and restaurants, there are whale watches, sea kayak tours, and it's right near Acadia National Park (you can drive your car up to the top of Cadillac Mountain and see a beauuuutiful view overlooking Bar Harbor and the ocean, or go to Sand Beach-the beach does have an entrance fee). There is a Pirate's Cove mini golf place within a few minutes drive of the downtown area, but for really young kids, I'm not sure how much there will be for them. I have never really paid attention since I don't have kiddos yet lol. I know on the 4th of July they do fireworks and usually have events in the downtown area, but I'm not sure what. I recommend checking out http://www.barharborinfo.com/ to get a better idea!

This is the place DH and I tend to go on my birthday, so we can spend the day walking around downtown, driving up Cadillac Mt. and mini golfing. Highly recommend getting lobster while you're in Maine too-you won't regret it (unless you're allergic to shellfish, then you might LOL).
Go! I love Bar Harbor! I can't tell you too many things like Sarah can-it's been about 6 years since I was there last-but it is a gorgeous place to go.
And I 2nd getting lobster, especially if you find a more "rustic" place, like a lobster pound-there's quite a few in the area.
York is one of my favorite places. We got our engagement pics done there.
