Recommend your baby carrier please!

Hey ladies! Baby C's first birthday is coming up in December and we're going to ask my in-laws for a nice baby carrier. All I know of is the Ergo.

We've used her Moby wrap about 2 times per week for a 30-45 minute walk and her baby Bjorn 2-3 times a week shopping/out-and-about since she was born. She is about at the point where we're wanting to transition her to a different one since she's getting a bit heavy in the Moby.

 Recommendations? TIA!

Re: Recommend your baby carrier please!

  • We have an ergo, bjorn, ring sling and mei tai. I don't use the bjorn with dd but did with ds. I love the ring sling and mei tai and ergo. You couldn't go wrong with any of those.

  • I have a BabyHawk mei tai and loved it when D was smaller. Now he's a beast and is too big for it. If you plan on using it for a long time with Miss C, I'd go ahead and get a ToddlerHawk.

We absolutely hated the Bjorn. It was uncomfortable for both D and myself. DH never wore it.

  • I have a Moby, mei tai, Hoppediz woven wrap, and a Boba.  We love them all for different reasons.

The Moby was a fave, but DS is 7 months old and nearly 24 pounds now, so he has outgrown it.

The woven wrap is comfy and beautiful.  I can wear it for hours, DH will not wear a wrap at all.  The woven is harder to manipulate for me in a hurry, and most of the wraps I do, you have to do up and undo everytime.  It's not like the moby where you can tie it once and you are set and can take baby in and out easily.

The mei tai is our current fave of the moment.  It's easy to get on and off and it's comfy for me.  It's my go to carrier for quick stops to the dairy or cafes.   DH thinks it's too girly for him to wear.  Oh, another con is that the straps can get dirty or wet when it rains b/c it touches the ground when putting it on.

We got a Boba G2 Toddler carrier since DS is so big and it can be used up to 45+ pounds.  I like it, and it's comfy.  I wore DS for 6 hours at the rugby game a couple weekends ago and I was fine.  We got this carrier b/c DH wanted to wear him, and a SSC was the only thing he thought was "masculine" enough for him to wear.  We got the Boba instead of the Ergo b/c it was uncomfortable for me (I am 5 feet tall); the Ergo straps were too bulky for me, even with the sport version that has less padding.

    Hope that helps.

  • We have an Ergo, a Kelty TC 2.0 for hiking and a sling. I love the Ergo most for it's easy of use, comfort, etc. The Kelty is nice because she is nto pressed against us and can move around/see more, but Dh can wear it longer than I can for sure. Fwiw, babywearing is the main way of baby transport here, and everyone seems to have an Ergo.

  • Thanks so much for your help ladies. Now I can go ahead and research a bit on the the ones you've mentioned so that I know what they look like. :)

I received the Moby and the BabyBjorn both as hand-me-downs and we used them a ton. The Baby Bjorn has definitely become uncomfortable as she's gotten heavier! 2.5 kgs and nearly 10 kgs is sure a huge difference.

I'm 5'6" so I think the Ergo straps would be okay for me. I wore a heavy hiking backpack around London for 4 days recently and though my shoulders were sore/it was doable.

Again, really appreciate the advice! Off to research.

  • Ashley, if you want we can get together in a few weekends and you can try out our babyhawk and our Ergo (it's a sport). I also have a woven wrap but I've not been brave enough to try it by my self yet!

We just got the Ergo for DH because he said that the babyhawk was to girly for him!

  • we have the manducca which is really almost exactly like the ergo, but it has the nb insert already in it. I like that I can hip carry her for things like getting on a plane, or back carry when I?m out shopping. We don?t front carry anymore because she seems to like the back carry better. The manducca is 99Euros or more if you get a special print.

  • I'm glad everyone seems to like the Ergo. I registered for an Ergo and an Ergo Infant Insert.

  • Nic that'd be fantastic. Yes, we really need to setup a time to get together anyway. Now this gives us an excuse.

Thanks again ladies. Right now we're going between the Ergo and Baby Hawk.

  • I have the Ergo performance and love it. It is supposed to be a little lighter and more breathable than the sport but I have never seen a regular or sport version so I can't compare. DD is16 months and about 21# and I still carry her both front and back very comfortably

  • I have a ring sling, two woven wraps and an Ergo.  I haven't used the sling in ages because the wraps and Ergo just work better for us right now.  The thing I love about our Ergo is that I can wear the 13 month old or the 3 year old with it - comfortably - and it is easy to just toss on and go.  And it made negotiating our trip home so much easier, since I was by myself with the boys.

Good luck with your choice - there are a lot of great carriers out there.

  • I got a double sling baby carrier which has 8 different carrying positions. I?ve been using this since my DD was three months old. She?s now 36 months but still loves it! It is ergogenically designed and the double sling distributes baby?s weight more evenly across back and shoulders providing extra security and comfort.
