Overseas phone bill

So, I finally added DH's bank account to our Mint account last night, and I was going through putting everything in its category when I noticed something strange: we've apparently been paying about $15/month to a Japanese cell phone company. Since he just PCSed back to the US a few months ago, it's pretty obvious that, some way or another, the bill never got cancelled.

I talked to him about it this morning, and he agreed and thought it was really weird, because he thought he had taken care of that before he left. So my question is, how does he go about cancelling it now? He thinks they're going to require him to do that in person, which is obviously not a realistic option for us. Do you guys know if a phone call will suffice, or if we're doomed to forever just eat the cost? lol

Re: Overseas phone bill

    1. If he thought he already took care of it, see if you can find any documentation indicating that the account was cancelled such as a receipt.
    2. With or without documentation, contact the company by any method possible. Call them or initiate an email.
    3. If all else fails, talk to your bank about it. See what options they give you for challenging the charges.

  • Thank you! I'm just facepalming at this point - and I'm about 98% sure he doesn't have any documentation, even assuming he did do what he was supposed to to cancel it. I'll have him try to contact the company when he gets home later.
  • Is it AU, docomo, or softbank? There should be an english language website for each of those companies. You are right that the phone numbers to call would be international for you but they have email links on their websites.
