Thanksgiving preparation

Yes, I realize it's a month out, but hey.  So this year we will have 6-9 people to feed for dinner.  If it's towards the 6 end, I was thinking of doing turkey breast (they do have that don't they? Just the breast?) if it's more towards the 9 end, I was thinking of doing a small turkey but am concerned about how to prepare it.  I was thinking of brining it, but have no idea how I would marinade a turkey in brine and keep it cold.  Any thoughts?  Insights? TIA!

  • It's requiring a credit card and says I have a 2 week free trial before I get billed. Sad

  • I just bought a Turkey Breast in Costco and it was perfect I'm sure it would have done 6 people.

Ooh, Costco!  Was it just the breast meat or did it have the bone & skin on still? I think if I do the breast only, I'll want to keep it with bone and skin to try and maintain some moisture with the meat.

Just breast meat.. It actually came with a gravy package as well. All you had to do was put it in the slow cooker or oven. Pre-seasoned and all.. it was super moist and yummy!

ETA: it was in the Freezer section. They also had different ones in the main section(fresh meat, close to the chicken) at my Costco.

  • Legal Britt - well thank you for sharing anyhow!  I'm just a bit iffy when it comes to giving my CC info to even get a trial.

Johlise - I may have to poke around the nearby Costco then to see what options they have.  thanks!

  • Re: America's Test Kitchen - I just signed up with my email to get the free stuff (no CC info) and I get emails now and then with recipes.  I also have a cookbook and enjoy watching it on TV.  I would trust those guys with my life :)  That's just an FYI that you should sign up for their emails because they have good stuff, although you can't use the whole website.

Re: Turkey, I would get a small one no matter what just because I like leftovers and/or I'm sure the guests would take some home!  My mom has done Martha Stewart recipes before and it always turns out really good (I seem to remember rubbing it down with lots of butter...).

  • I've used this recipe twice:

    http://allrecipes.com/recipe/easy-herb-roasted-turkey/detail.aspx

It's easy and tastes good...that's what matters to me.  :)  I've done a full turkey both times; the first time, we only had 4 people, so I just got the smallest turkey I could find.  Then we just had lots of leftovers!

  • Thanks, Avila!

And thank you to everyone who suggested America's Test Kitchen - even though I can't access that recipe, I did sign up for the free emails.  Part of me wonders where I've been the whole while though since I've never heard of it prior!

They have a show on the "Create" channel (it's 9-3 for us), it's awesome!

  • I would def make a full turkey. Not everyone likes breast meat and maybe it's just the people i know, but people eat way more on Thanksgiving. :) I'd buy like a 10lb turkey and go for it. :)
