What do tickets normally cost you?
What do you get for that price? ie how much food/choice, drinks, entertainment, childcare.
How far away from the base (or downtown/city area) is it?
I'm asking this b/c our party this year is 60pp, buffet with no vegetarian options beside salad, and it's easily an hour away from us with apparently no rooms available for the night. I think this is ridiculous.
Re: holiday party poll
Yeesh! I'd be pretty ticked off especially since it's an hour away with no over-night accommodations available.
As far as I know, K's unit doesn't do holiday parties; could be the difference between active and ARNG though.
I don't think I've been to a holiday party that cost money... They're usually potlucks on/near base...
With the details you've mentioned here, I wouldn't go. No way I'd be paying $60 to go to a holiday party an hour away. DH might be obliged to go, but I am not. He would be going solo if that was the case.
Good grief.
Yeah, I'd be balking big time at paying $420 for night of "frivolity".
I changed my name
At our current base it's a small get together, tickets are $15-$20, and that's mainly to cover the cost of the door prizes which normally include 2-3 big electronics (Wii, BluRay Player, etc). It's a buffet meal, catered, and all you want for drinks (normally a cooler of beer and a cooler of soda). We have it in the maintenance bay of DH's shop on base.
At our last base it was a bigger squadron, so it was at a hotel, catered buffet. Tickets were $25, I think. Pretty awesome door prizes, good food, open bar (I think). It was off base, but relatively close to the base, and the squadron had arranged extra drivers for the base's DD service.
I would not be attending a holiday party that was going to cost me more than $50 to attend. There are more important things in my life I'd rather have that money for. To even have a holiday party more than a few minutes away seems ridiculous to me.
OK, I'm glad I'm not the crazy one. I've been to squadron parties on base, and I think they were usually about $20 with cash bar.
We don't have to get a hotel room, but drinking and partying until midnight isn't as much fun if one of you has to stay sober.
H will probably have to go. I'm not mean enough to make him go by himself. I also don't know if that would look bad for him especially since I avoid all spouse functions.
At the last party I went to, it was a squadron of about 200, but only maybe 5 or 6 officers, most of them young CGOs. This time, it's for a joint base, and while I haven't met anyone H works with yet, I think the most junior in the office is a MSgt, maaaaaybe TSgt. So, yeah, that could explain the difference. I think there are a couple generals/admirals there.
This means I'm going to have to wear a real formal dress, right? Bah.
I should mention that at least it's a tiered price. Anywhere from 35-75pp depending on rank.
LL, that's more expensive than mine for those ranks! Except, you guys got drinks.
Do you know if it was well attended? I think right now ours has less than 50% of the tickets sold. This is why I'm assuming there will be strong pressure to attend.
As far as I know E's was always during the work day and cost nothing, they just BBQed.
As far as E's current civilian job, we generally pay about $15 pp and its at a hotel or banquet room. The first year it was buffet style and the food was awful, last year it was at a hotel and the food was much much better. You get two tickets per person for soft drinks, and its a cash bar. They also have a person on their staff that does photography as a side job, we always get our picture taken for free and get to have a 5X7 copy of the photo. Its generally in downtown which is 15 mins from our house. They offer free taxi rides for those that need them. They always have a raffle for amounts of money or for gift cards. We love going, its so much fun!
I am such a loser. I usually avoid Wing sponsored anything. If it was required, and H wanted me to come, I will reluctantly show up. But if I have to pay more than 20 bucks for beer and pizza... no. Ha, I was even excited that the AF ball fell during his deployment, that way I wouldn't even have to have the discussion of why I didn't want to be seen making a huge fool of myself in front of his bosses. I make a really terrible Military wife.
