do I need to re-confirm my start date?

On 10/3, I was offered a position and received the paperwork outlining the details of the offer. It was exactly what was described to me over the phone, so I signed the contingent acceptance and returned it (contingent on passing a background check, references, the usual). They called me about two days later and asked me when I wanted my start date to be. I looked at a calendar and said, "Let's start on 10/17 (this coming Monday). The recruiter said great, someone will be on contact with you regarding the details of the start date.

It's now 10/13 and I haven't heard anything yet.... last night I sent an e-mail to the recruiter to re-confirm the start date and if there was any additional items I need to bring with me besides the paperwork they sent to me when they offered the position and who I'll need to contact when I get to the office.

I'm now getting crazy thoughts like "What if there was something in my background check that they want to rescind the offer? What if they changed their mind?" When I think logically, I have a decent credit history (I forgot to pay a bill last month but that's it) and no criminal background. DH pointed out that if there was something amiss, they would have contacted me immediately, especially since my start date is coming up.

Am I being paranoid? The poor recruiter has been swamped (when I would contact her, sometimes it would take36 to 48 hours to get a response from her), so maybe that's it.

I just really want to get back to the working world!!!

Re: do I need to re-confirm my start date?

  • It doesn't hurt to ask just to verify time of starting and everything. I know when I started I had to meet with HR first to go over benefits and some paperwork and then went to my dept. I would assume you are fine though. I agree that if there was something wrong they would have called and said its a No.
  • I would just call and ask. Then ask if they would mind sending you an email confirmation.

  • Ditto to pps.

  • I wouldn't worry yet.  If Monday rolls around and no follow up that would be awhile and they should let you know the status.

I can tell you that my company won't confirm a start date until they get back the background check returned.  Mine took over a week. So from the date my supervisor called to verbally offer me the job, it took over a week to confirm a start date. Still, during that time the recruiter emailed me to say they were still waiting for the background stuff so I think your would be that courteous but recruiters are the worst.

  • As I suspected, she was swamped - late this afternoon I got an e-mail from HR saying that they've been swamped (the company is opening new stores and they're hiring for the holiday season now), but confirming the Monday start date.

    Whew!
