Does most new construction *not* come with a fridge?

Ours did.

I find this strange.

House Hunters, my primary source for real estate information (kidding), shows most new construction homes with all kitchen appliances but a fridge.

Why? Because it's the most expensive? Would most buyers not happily pay a little more for the home and not have to pay out of pocket for a refrigerator? (I know, I know, rolling it into a 30 year mortgage is not as MM as just straight-up buying the dang thing).

Re: Does most new construction *not* come with a fridge?

  • Ours is not coming with a fridge.  We have an option to purchase a fridge throught the builder and it's not a good deal at all.  I'm really not sure why it's this way.

I compared the cost of the microwave/stove/dishwasher from the builder as well and it's a much better deal to get these items through them rather then buying them on our own.

  • My new construction did not.  We had the option of getting one through them when we upgraded the other appliances but chose to get it on our own.  Other appliances are built in, a firdge is not.  A lot of "used" houses don't have fridges either unless it's a selling point or something.
  • Ours did not.  The only appliances required by the state are ones that require installation work (such as the microwave and dishwasher).  Therefore, they were the only ones provided by our builder and the stove and fridge were up to the buyers.

  • Where I live - typically not. By law, a working stove/oven must be installed.

Same here - we are doing microwave/stove/dishwasher from builder, but fridge/washer/dryer on our own.

  • Ours is coming with one. It initally seemed like we were getting it for "free" but when looking at our itemized list of upgrades the fridge cost was in there. It's also pretty crazy, because they are claiming our fridge is worth about 200 more than I could buy it for at an online appliance store.
  • not usual.  we're getting a fridge in our house, but it was a spec home that was at the top of our price range, and we agreed to their asking price, but asked for about 10k in upgrades, including a fridge, washer, dryer, water softener, and landscaping.

This was true for us as well.

  • Ours would have but we decided to upgrade our appliances so we got a credit.

  • My condo came with a fridge. My townhouse did not. Both new construction.

    ETA my actual response:

I would ask them for the credit and buy the fridge yourself, unless you are trying to avoid the hassle.  Any $200 savings you can get the better!

  • Most new homes around here do not come with one in the standard appliance package.  You can add it on, but as many pps mentioned, it comes at a premium price.  Most resales also do not include refrigerators (or w/d for that matter).  Only appliances that are "built in" are typically included.

  • It's not included because it's not built in. Just like microwaves... if it's an over-the-range microwave, it's included. If it's a countertop model, it's not.

  • Yeah, add this to the list of weird things about buyers on HH. "Well, if we pick number 2, we'd have to buy a fridge and a washer/dryer." Well, you can get all 3 for like $1000 if you try hard enough. Hardly a reason to not buy a house.
