What do you keep?

So, I've mentioned that we're PCSing, obviously we are cleaning/packing/going through our stuff.

I think I have every single movie ticket stub I've ever been to. I should make a scrapbook or something. Also, I keep cards (birthday, anniversary, etc) I have stacks of them! I always have, I have cards from my baptism and first birthday (obviously my mom saved those for me.. but I kept the tradition)

Also, those of you on FB know this, but I keep all my boxes. I keep the original packaging and everything- I figure whats a better way to move it without breaking it than the way it comes from the manufacturer? Also, I have been in a relationship with some of the boxes since before H was around. lol (we're doing a dity, we dont really mind moving)

Re: What do you keep?

  • I also keep cards/letters [I still have letters from a pen pal I had in elementary school] - I have piles at my place and my parents' place. I hold on to the original boxes for our bigger stuff - flat screen, computer, gaming systems etc. H thinks I'm crazy because I keep them, but whatev.

I don't hold on to movie stubs, but I hold on to stubs from sporting events and concerts - I have quite a few now that I've been a season ticket holder for football and basketball teams the past few years.

  • I keep cards as well :) I tried to keep boxes but our current apartment wouldn't allow me to keep them all. (Although every closet you open you see stacks of boxes haha)

As for scrapbooking I keep all sorts of stuff from vacations. For instance, we went on our mini moon to Niagara Falls... I kept our Adventure Pass, City Map, stubs from stuff etc. When I studied abroad I kept my plane tickets, visa, student ID etc for my scrapbook.  H has kept some of his military stuff from training (like his hat from when he trained Basics, his first fitted helmet from Pilot School etc)

I hate clutter so I try to keep things well organized and filter every move-- otherwise you man see me on Hoarders: Buried Alive :-p

  • I had been holding on to cards and letters. After the massive number of cards we received at our wedding showers, the wedding itself and then baby showers I've decided to go through them all and only keep ones with meaningful messages in them (that's next weekend's project actually).

I keep the boxes for breakables; I have a few lines of figurines I've been collecting for years, and I have the boxes for those. C keeps the boxes for electronics, although we did get rid of the TV boxes due to a lack of storage space here.

I'm actually in the process of purging our stuff so that our next move is not as overwhelming as this last one was. We've been here over a year now, so we're going through closets and getting rid of anything we haven't used or missed.

  • I keep cards also.  I saw a post on pinterest where some one punched holes in the cards, put rings through them and made a flip book.  She attatched pictures to some of them.  Some had notes about the person who sent them, a memory of the holiday or what was going on in her life at that time.  I thought it was a cute idea.

  • Have you seen this post on D&R? It's aimed at Christmas cards but it would help organize all your cards in a way that would be easier to flip through.

I'm weirdly sentimental about some things, but I threw out all my yearbooks except senior year.

  • Dh and I both have a hard time letting go of clothing that is attached to a memory.  Jacket he wore when we first started dating, t-shirts from high school, etc.

I did turn all my high school t-shirts into a quilt.  It made me feel like less of a hoarder haha.

  • We each have a deep photo box that we keep stuff in. We both have cards, letters, and things like that, but then we each keep different "personal" stuff in it. If it doesn't fit in the box, we discuss and decide together.

  • I feel like H and I are very un-sentimental jerks after reading this.  We really don't keep much.  We have the cards we gave eachother, and all of our wedding and shower cards, but other cards we get rid of.

We are both anti-clutter, and all about ease of moving (even if movers are doing it for us), so we are quick to throw things out unless they are really meaningful.  During deployment I'll save all the Christmas cards, thank you cards, etc., that we get for H to see when he gets home, but after that we throw them out.

This. I don't keep much. I have our wedding and shower cards and DS's baby shower cards, but other than that everything goes. I keep the boxes to our big/valuable items. I just recently through out all of my club t-shirts from high school and college. They look horrible on me because they're not fitted at all and I have no sentimental attachment to them.

I did this with a combo of high school and college shirts. I had originally planned on doing one quilt but I think I have enough for two...

  • I keep cards, pictures and little things that remind of some special event in my life.  I even have a few sweat shirts that I just cannot get rid of.  They are just way to soft and comfortable.  I would never wear them in public but around the house who cares.

  • When we got married I started keeping every card we received(DH's Grandma sends one for everything) but in the last couple of years I've thrown most of them away unless they were picture cards, cards from getting married, cards that DH gave me or I gave him and any card my mom has given me. I keep those in one of those accordion folder things. I keep DH's in a photo box along with special notes, or objects. I keep ALL pictures, I have most in photo albums and some in a photo box. I also keep obituaries, engagement/announcements, movie stubs, and everything from trips we take to zoos, museums, etc. I've started a scrapbook for travel that I'll eventually put all the stubs from those things in.

Growing up I collected frog stuff, it started out because of "special" event when I was young. Almost 15 years worth of frog figurines and knickknacks have been sitting in multiple boxes, untouched except when we moved, for a couple of years. We just did a full DITY move last month and I've finally gotten rid of them except for a few items that were special to me.

I had all of my school shirts until this move, I decided it was time to throw them away. My husband and I have moved duty stations 4 times in 6 years so we usually go through things often, these things I just couldn't part with until now.

  • I get some of the wedding cards and baby cards for a long time but eventually tossed them. I don't like to keep stuff because of clutter.

  • I really like the idea of throwing away anything that isn't nailed down or absolutely essential.

So, I threw away all of our wedding/birthday/anniversary cards when we PCSed the first time, and I just throw them in recycling when we get them now. I even sent back a ton of old pictures back to my dad that I wasn't using in a book or displaying. The thing I am having a hard time with is all of the stuff that MIL gave to DH because he couldn't see it be thrown away. Old trophies and 2nd grade art projects... I want to get rid of those sooo badly, but I fear they will live in my basement forever. DH wont let me touch them.

    I am a jerk.

  • I want to say I don't keep a lot, but I don't know if that's true.

We have all of our wedding/shower cards in this really cute card box that was made for the wedding so it's still serving its purpose. I think I have a stack of cards from the last year, birthdays and such that I'll probably get rid of.

I keep some of the original boxes for stuff. My mom bought us a bride and groom snow globe with an inscription on it that I kept so it packs safely. Same for the sand ceremony we did.

H hordes electronic parts. Even if we don't need a specific cord for our set up now, he keeps it so in 3 years, if we need it, we'll have it.
