Here's an interesting article on a bartender who didn't get a tip from a guy who bought dinner and drinks at the bar and even gave her a nasty tip...
My question is - if you get take out at a restaurant, do you tip? I ALWAYS tip my bartender as well as my waiter/waitress but do you tip the to go person? Thoughts....
Re: To tip or not to tip?
I don't tip the person if we get takeout, since they just handed it to me. If I eat or get a drink, I do tip.
Here's my tipping questions: If you are at a bar and just have a glass of water, do you still tip? Or if you've already bought a drink and have a water, do you tip for both drinks or just the one you pay for?
Most places I have worked where I have had to do take-out, the take out is actually more work that someone eating at the bar or table. Not just the take the order, put it in part, but then the server usually has to package the food, scrounge up whatever utensils, condiments, whatever, also the server/bartender still has to declare the made a certain percentage of the bill as a tip. Take out orders just plain suck.
To the first part, yes I always tip my server and bartender. I have worked as both before and I know how it goes. I do not tip the standard 15 or 20% all the time, though. I tip based on how I feel the service was. Mediocre 15%, pretty good 20%, excellent possibly a little more than 20%. I have never not tipped, but if the service is downright terrible, I will only do 10% and I will usually write some comments on the bill.
Tip the to-go person? Nope, not usually.... but we don't usually order to go food from normal sit-down restaurants, kwim? If we get to-go it's like pizza or chinese take-out.
