My Discover Card account has been hijacked (by somebody who likes to shop at Walmart, apparently). Now I have to go without my beloved card until Monday when the new one shows up. ::sniffle:: At least they caught it! They charged over $1800 to my card today. Too bad they won't let me keep the cash-back bonus from the fraudulent charges (I love my Discover cash-back -- I make like $400-$500 in giftcards/cashback a year charging almost everything to my card and then paying it off in full every month).
This happened with DH's Bank of America credit card earlier this year, too. They assured us that it's not like in the olden days when somebody hacked a website where you used the card and stole the numbers. Instead, it seems there are some computer programs that these folks use to try to charge $1.00 to billions of card numbers, and see which ones go through. Then once the $1.00 charge goes through, they start charging other stuff to the numbers until the card gets shut down. The $1.00 charge to my card came from Google G-Pay, but could also be Paypal or some random site.
So, word to the wise, if you notice a random $1.00 charge on your account that you're pretty sure you didn't make, don't just let it go because it's only $1.00 -- alert the card company to possible fraud in case they don't catch it right away.
Re: Ugh -- fraudulent credit card charges
Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
If you don't have some kind of monitoring program you should look into one. Once someone has a group of CC numbers. (Which they stole from somewhere they don't just make up numbers to try) They then also sell them in online chat rooms. Those are used to piece together with other data points of yours that are for sale. To find additional cards to use or to create phantom profiles in the credit bureaus. Make sure what ever you purchase has some kind of web crawl technology and real time alerts built in. This is your best line of defense. I work in the industry of fraud protection. If you would like some options I would be happy to give you some but I'm not here to push our products just warn you to take procautions now.
This is also a great time to figure out what you already get for free. I have 1K of fraud insurance built into my homeowners and auto policies. Then what each CC covers and or offers. It's a pain but better to understand before you need to. Good Luck!
