Husband do for a living. I know some ladies are a  SAHM or are getting ready to be a SAHM, but what did you do before that..

And if you could have chosen a different career what would it have been.

And if you could have chosen a different career what would it have been.

Sorry I don't know if this has been asked before.

My husband is a carpenter/contractor. He went to school to be an architect but realized that he couldn't sit behind a desk 8 hrs a day.He loves what he does, but it get a little tough in the winter.

I'm a secretary/ office manager at a packing & shipping company, we ship stupidly overpriced art work, antiques, etc. all around the world.

I absolutely love to cook, if I could do it all over again, I would love to be a chef!

  • I'm going to be a SAHM. Actually, I stopped working at the end of June:)

Before that I was an executive assistant to the CEO of a consulting firm. It was just a job to me...not a career. It was ok though.

I wanted to be a french teacher, but I never finished college for various reasons!

  • Oops! I forgot about Josh:)

He's the VP of Supply Chain at a transportation and logistics company. Think of them as a small FedEx that's only on the east coast. He loves his job. I think he'd also love teaching history at a college level too...he's mentioned that before.
  • Kirk is in politics.  He does microtargeting, which is where you take data on voters (or donors) and merge it with consumer data that you buy from various sources, then you target specific messages to specific audiences that will pay more attention because it is an issue that is meaningful to them.

I'm an attorney.  I work in corporate compliance mostly.

  • I am a SAHM but before that I was a teacher. I have my masters in secondary History education.

H is an accountant for a hedge fund in NYC. He likes what he does but he would love to run his own hedge fund someday

If I could be anything I think I would still be a teacher.

  • H is the general manager of his family's business, he will be taking over once his dad retires in a few years.  He loves him job but he works a lot, he leaves the house super super early and doesn't get home until dinner time, and he is on call 24-7.   This has been an adjustment for us both now that we have Parker but we we are figuring it out as we go.

Before becoming a SAHM in 2010, I worked for 3 years in the substance abuse field, then changed fields and worked for a home health agency as a marketing coordinator.  I really liked what I did but it waasn't something I was passionate about or anything.

Now I am a stay at home mom to an almost 15 month old.  I also have a photography business with my sister.  It is definitely a lot more challenging to balance everything than I had anticipated but I love having something I am doing that I love and I can grow in, and also feel like I am not just "Parker's mom", if that makes sense.  Not saying being a SAHM isn't enough, for me I just enjoy having another outlet and something that is just my own.

  • I work at our local newspaper. I put in ads for the classifieds, take complaints about delivery and am in charge of all our website sales & products. I always wanted to become a doctor, but never applied myself enough in school to get into a better college.

Jon is a correctional officer. He loves his job but would really like to work in federal law enforcement.

  • I'm a RN in the busiest ER/trauma center in the state. I absolutely love my job. I love the variety, I love meeting interesting patients, I love trying to figure out what's going on with my patients, I love those rare times when I actually help save someone's life. It's really awesome. I can't imagine doing anything else, except maybe be an ER physician.

DH is a full-time firefighter and paramedic. He works 24 hour shifts, every third day, so he's gone a lot. He also volunteers for the local and state search and rescue teams. He loves his job, although he really wanted to be an air force pilot, but he is red-green colorblind so they wouldn't accept him.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I'm a Graphic Designer, newly minted Web Designer & a hobby photographer

DH is a business owner/mechanic/tow truck driver

I wouldn't do anything else. I love what I do. I know DH wanted to go to school for mechanical engineering, but couldn't afford it then so he went into the family business instead.

  • I am a real estate paralegal for a small law firm.  I work and live in the same town, so it makes commuting and/or getting to Sam's daycare when needed a lot easier.  I also work 4 days a week, so I get to stay home with Sam on Mondays.  I currently have my Associates in Paralegal Studies, and have recently applied to complete my Bachelors in Criminal Justice.  When and if that occurs and I finally complete my degree, law school is the next step, so I guess ideally my dream job is to be an attorney, and I'm slowing heading in that direction, if the stars align...

Chris is a release engineer/coder for Harmonix Music Systems -- think Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Central... yup, that Harmonix.  Honestly, I think he's exactly where he would want to be, maybe more of a producer than a coder, but I think he's happy where he stands.

  • Jay works overnight security at a high rise residence in downtown Chicago. He also is working on starting his own web design business which is going well right now. Security is definitely not his chosen career but he's very good at what he does and it pays the bills until we can either get him back in school or this web design thing pans out.

I'm an attorney. I work as a staff attorney for a judge in our juvenile court. Most days I'm a glorified secretary but I enjoy the work and I'm making a lot of connections.

I'd like to stay in the public sector for at least the next 9 years so that the government will pay off the balance of my loans but my end goal is to end up in a private family law firm.

  • I'm a waitress at a Seafood and Steakhouse on the beach. I work the breakfast shift so I'm there from like 6:30am-1ish. Since this area is seasonal, we close at the end of the month and don't open again until March or April. So once this lil' guy comes out, I'll be a SAHM until we open.

Matt manages a pizza and ice cream shop across the street from the restaurant I work at. He usually works from 4pm-12, so we won't need day care which is nice. His store also closes for the season (already has actually- super jealous) so we'll both be home with the baby for the first 6 months!

We both wanted to be actors at some point, Hollywood and the silver screen is kind of our thing. I don't LOVE what I do, but all I've ever wanted to be is a mother, so this gives me the opportunity to make a lot of money in a small amount of time so I can spend more time being what I love. I would also love to start up a bakery if I had the proper funds.

  • I am in advertising at a regional newspaper. I am over the employment section, so basically I sell the ads and then I design them and put the section together. It's a good job and it pays the bills but I never pictured myself in sales. I have a BA in History and a BA in Political Science. My original plan was to go to grad school so I could teach at a college level, but plans change.

Guy does overnight security at a food manufacturing plant. He does overnights so that he can care for our daughter during the day while I'm at work. He loves that he's able to do this. He adores Ellie and he loves that he gets to spend so much time with her.

  • I am a nanny for a 3 year old.  My son goes to work with me.  I always thought I wanted to be a teacher, even recieved my bachelor's degree in elementary education, but then decided it wasn't for me.

My husband currently works in credit and also is in school.  He will be graduating in spring with a degree in computer networking.

Once Floyd settles into his new career, we hope that I will be able to be a SAHM.

  • Currently I'm an executive assistant, but in a few weeks I'll be transitioning to a full-time writer for my company's website. That's what I went to school for and what I've always wanted to do, so I'm pretty happy. :)

D works overnight security for a marina. He likes that he gets to be outside and walk around, but ultimately he'd like to work in some type of law enforcement.

  • We both work for the same company, just different departments. We work for an insurance company, our home office is in Boston but we work at the smaller site up in NH.

I'm a Control Analyst, basically I fix accounts that people have screwed up. DH handles a little bit of everything but mostly with money coming into us.

Neither of these jobs are what we want to do but they pay the bills and it's nice that we get to work together. I still don't think DH knows what he wants to do, I think he would be happy doing something creatative. I want to start my own Dog walking business, there aren't a lot of options for that around my area but I'm to scared to leave a secure job to do that. Maybe some day

  • Funny question to ask me right now.... Currently my full-time job is running a mental health and substnace abuse treatment program in a women's correctional facility.  It's exactly what I wanted to do and what I went to grad school for.  But I hate it.  I'm so burned out it's not even funny.

I also just became a Slumber Parties consultant back in June.  I love it.  It's lighthearted and fun.  Having a BLAST doing it.

Also working on starting up a catering business.  My goal is to be able to quit my full-time job in 6-8 months and turn catering and SP into a full-time income.

H is a project manager for a large-scale concrete company.  His degree is in Architecture, but he's kind of moved from designing these projects into selling them.  He's actually interviewing today for a huge promotion in his company, moving more towards managing the production of all these materials.  He really enjoys his job.  He's always been in the construction field, even since he was 16.  But he likes being able to use his architecture knowledge and his construction experience and make some decent money, not just swing a hammer all his life.

  • I'm in Real Estate (Assistant Property Manager) to a TownhouseApartment complex.  I'm actually switching jobs to a different company but same job title in a few weeks.  The new job will have better benefits and I will be next in line for a promotion to property manager.

I would LOVE to work at Kleinfeld's or similar high end wedding boutique since I'm still obsessed with weddings and dresses!

H is an engineer at Fidelity Investments; he would love to be a cook (his true passion) but he feels it wouldn't be enough $$ and the hours would cut into family time.

  • I work for a publishing/conferences company that focuses mostly on biotech. I work in list rental. We're a 3 person department that takes all the names from all our conferences worldwide and all the publications worldwide, tosses them into a huge database and rents the name for 3rd party mailings and email blasts. Currently, I set up html emails blasts for clients, do all of our invoicing and client relations and I can do the database side in a pinch too. I'm the only one who can do all 3 of our jobs.  While this is certainly not where I thought I'd end up, it's kind of a great gig...I make a pretty decent base salary, get a profit share check every quarter, my schedule is pretty flexible so far as vacations/dr's appointments etc go and starting in 2012 I'm going to get to work from home full time. So it's tough to argue with the perks even if the job is not exactly thrilling.

I graduated from college with a license to teach high school level English, but didn't student teach until senior year...at which point I realized that I wasn't cut out for the job. If I could've done anything, I would have acted. I was in a lot of productions in both high school and college and I would followed up on trying to do more stage stuff if I had unlimited funds and no obligations :o)    And if not that then possibly something in the magazine industry - editing, copywriter, article writing..I'm not sure.

Jon is a senior project manager at a large biotech company. He's only been there a few months but so far he's super busy but liking the people and the job a lot.

  • I am an adolescent social worker for out state child protection agency.  DH is a chef.

If I could have chosen a different field, I would be a neuropsychologist specializing in brain injuries, or a special education teacher.  In a dream world, I would love to have a cooking show or travel show.  DH is going to start college in the fall to get out of cooking for a living.  He is either going to be a vet tech, get a business degree, or a massage therapist.

I always think I'd want to work at a dress shop too! But then I think of the b!tchy brides, and second guess myself;)

  • I'm a nanny to a 3, 6, and 8 year old. I bring my son with me. It's basically like being a SAHM but I'm at someone else's home lol

I wanted to be a teacher but I knew eventually I'd be a SAHM so going through all the schooling wasn't worth it to me.

Once the youngest is in school f/t, I will be staying home.

My H is the VP of a construction company that does drywall and ceilings. He went to school to be an Engineer and he designs the trusses they do.

  • I am a Policy and Procedure Writer for a womens clothing retailer.  I also do a lot of the technical writing for the company, but of course they won't give me that title, because that involves a different (higher) pay grade.  I like my department and most of my co-workers but I'm over corporate America.

There are a million different things I want to do with my life. Right now - I'm currently thinking about changing careers and looking into a job at a career services or writing centers on college campuses. I love editing papers and a lot of my friends are going back to grad school or applying for new jobs and I've been having a blast ripping out the red pen and helping them work on their essays/resumes. So, I want to try and do something like that.

My husband is a Merchandiser for a retail pharmacy. However, he is a jack of all trades within the company.  If a manager is out of the store - he sometimes oversees the store, he helps with remodels, takes in store deliveries, etc. He hates his job. I hate his job. He's much smarter than the position allows him to be. It's a thankless job. He has an associate's degree in accounting and is trying to get into the accounting field to then find a company that will help pay to get his bachelors. But - it's tough finding a job in this economy that will take him with no experience and little educational background. Personally, I think he'll be miserable at a 9-5 job but he says he wants out of the retail world. I think he'd really excel as a retail manager.  He's also recently mentioned becoming an EMT and then working toward being a Paramedic.

Pretty much - neither of us know what we want to be when we grow up.

  • DH is a sales representative for a pressure sensitive adhesives company (tape). He travels a lot since his territory covers the entire Northeast.

I work as a Merchandising Brand Team Member in retail. I'm responsible for putting up signage and presentation of the store. I love working in retail, but I am looking forward to advancing in the company, eventually, and getting more responsibility.

  • I'm late to the party. We're both teachers. I teach elementary gifted education. Robin is an elementary PE teacher.

  • I'm late as well.

But Danny works in the IT dept at a local hospital. He just got this job this past February and he loves it.

I work as a classroom aide in special education classrooms. For the last 3 years I worked specifically with children with autism and this year I was moved to a Life Skills classroom.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I like my job, but it's not really what I want to do forever. I have my bachelor's in psychology, but I'm not sure now if I want to go back for my Masters and in what.
