We haven't had a discussion round these part in a while and I was just reading a story (in L&S I'm ashamed to say) about this whole movement to stop dirty dancing, which just happens to coincide with the new Footloose remake.
The story had a copy of a letter that went home to parents telling them to YouTube "freaking, juke dancing and grinding" and show it to their kids so they knew exactly what type of dances were forbidden.
This seriously made me laugh out loud. I just can't get worked up about this. The story did remind of a funny incident in high school before prom. They gave us an etiquette class and taught us how to properly get in and out of the limo like a lady (Lindsey Lohan seriously needed this class) and I if my memory serves correctly we made clickers out of Snapple bottle tops that we were supposed to click at the prom if we saw couples dancing too provocatively. I swear we were supposed to say, "make room for the Lord". (Amy if you're around help me out because my memory sucks.) Even though my school was conservative and had a fifties mentality the dancing was not prohibited.
Re: Banning "dirty" dancing
the first phrase that came to mind was "leave room for the holy spirit" before i even read your post. that always made me wonder, if it is a spirit, how much room could it possibly need?
we had the "chastity clickers" made from snapple caps and some anti-sex sticker. ahhhhhh those were the days.
We had nuns with rulers. We had to dance 12" apart.
I just feel like there's so much other stuff to worry about your teen doing. I really don't think that grinding at the school dance is going to lead to sex. A kid is going to have sex if they want to regardless of the way they are dancing. I see nothing wrong with a teacher or chaperone or whomever they have at those dances telling a couple to cool it if they are getting out hand on the dance floor but the idea of telling kids they can only dance a certain way is stupid.
I'm not exactly a prude, but the way some kids danced at our dances was definitely capable of making people hot and bothered.
That said, I agree that it should be on a case by case basis, and handled by chaperones who are given some sort of guideline for what's acceptable.
I LOLed at the chastity clickers. Wow.
Ahh, I'm a spaz today. I don't think dirty dancing made me wh0re. Or maybe it did. Haha!
FTR, I don't believe it leads to sex. Curiosity, maybe. But horny teenagers are always going to be curious and I don't think this is preventing anything.
