Tell me what to buy. Bonus points for links or PIPs. Gracias.

Zany Zoo
Fisher Price Cozy Coupe (has a floor board for 1 year olds)
My Blog Picture A Day Blog
This is one of Nolan's favorite birthday gifts.
Also, ride on toys are a big hit. We have one my Bright Starts (from TRU) that comes with 3 balls that pop out the front. I can't find a link though.
Books!! N is loving lift the flap books right now.
This is seriously the best money I've ever spent. However, I got it from craigslist so I spent a little less.
He plays with it constantly.
This drum has been a huge hit.
We personally don't have this but N's friend and cousin both do and he loves it.
That's all I've got.
Our crazy, wonderful life
+1 on Zany Zoo
+1 on books - she is obsessed now. She really loves one that you can touch and feel. There is a series by Matthew Van Fleet that she loves. This is the DOG one. Jane definitely likes the ones with photos better than with cartoons.
Wooden Blocks
A walker toy (we have one like this that goes from a walker into a ride-on toy). She still uses it even though she can fully walk /run.
Jane's two favorite first birthday gifts where:
a ball. Seriously, just a big rubber ball (a light one so she can lift and carry it).
This drum. I have since given it to two first birthday kids and also gotten rave reviews.
Evie loves balls. Any light rubber one. We have 3.. One of the large balls from the towers in Target / Walmart
I also second blocks.
Also: mega blocks

I agree with books- Collin has been obsessed with the first words ones since before he could talk. Now that he can, he points to things, I say them and he repeats me. He could do it for HOURS. He also loves the "Where is Baby's Belly Button" by Karen Katz (there are several others, Baby's Mommy, Daddy, etc). There are flaps to be lifted on each page.
He loves his farm little people right now. Farmer, cow, horse, pig, etc. (that may not help since she is just turning one, but his bday is 16 days past Christmas and I told people to go ahead and get him things for 18 months + and we just put it away until he was ready).
I agree with the Cozy Coup, Collin loves our neighbors and I just picked one up on freecycle because he has (and loves) this so i couldn't justify buying one.
He liked puzzle starting at around 16 months and now is loving them. We have the Melissa and Doung chunky puzzles like this and this.
Art supplys. Collin loves drawing with sidewalk chalk we have this. He also has his own crayons since he kept breaking SD's. These are the best/ most durable we have found
I second most, if not all, of the suggestions above. We got Jack a ball pit for his 1st bday:
It's a baby swimming pool (the top ring is not blown up so he could get in and out easily) filled with balls, which I got on Amazon. He loves it, all his friends love it, and he still plays in it a year later. But, it's something you have to have some room for, obviously. Jack had a play room that we kept this in.
FP Laugh and Learn House... all 3 girls love it!
Playskool Sit and Spin
Doll carriage/shopping cart
FP Laugh and Learn workbench
PB Anywhere chairs (just got these for the twins for their birthday and will get Abby one for Xmas)
Ditto the ride on toys!
Baby dolls
