Advice on finding the right realtor

We had a REALLY HORRIBLE first time buying experience when we purchased our condo and have been shopping around with realtors but haven't found THE ONE yet. Everyone's so anxious to get us to sign something and we won't until we feel 100% comfortable doing so. We just got so burned the first time it's making things so much worse. Does anyone have any advice? We are looking to sell our condo {renting is looking like more of an option} and buy a new place while the market is in our favor. What made you sign with your realtor?

Re: Advice on finding the right realtor

  • I don't know how to help besides interviewing agents that your friends or co-workers used to purchase their homes. I knew my agent was the right one when I felt comfortable with her.

Asking questions is key: how will they get paid, how much is the commission, what marketing will they be doing to sell your home? Also, if your selling agent is the one that will help you buy your next home, how many open houses will they have per your contract, do they offer a break in commission? I'd also make sure they present you a market analysis of your home.

If you are still at odds, email me at keith and kinsey (at) kw dot com and i'll find you an agent in your area.

I had a great first time homebuying experience, that's why I entered the business! My lender, on the other hand, left a bitter taste...

Good luck and if I can be of any help, please let me know!

  • our first realtor that we signed with was horrible, she gave us no information, knew nothing about the houses we saw and was working in an area she knew nothing about, so she was just showing us everyhome possible, even in areas i later found out were not safe. we found a new realtor and basically i spoke with a few realtors on the phone and did a meetup and home visit with them ( as a sort of trial) i let them know before hand we will not be signing with them unless we are comfortable and we are a match, our guy that found us our home is amazing, he knew everything about the areas and homes we saw , he is easy to get in contact with and he took us on numerous tours around the new city we are moving to.

my advice is do trial meetups if you have the time, and dont sign with someone who is pressuring you. get someone well informed so you know when you find a house you have all the information you need to make a decision

  • I agree with the previous posts, just talk to a few Realtors and go with whom you feel comfortable.

I am a Realtor in Westchester & Putnam County, not sure if that's the area where you are, but our brokerage also has Realtors in other areas as well as NYC and Connecticut. If you want more info feel free to email me at stephanie at jphilip.com.

May I ask what made your first Realtor horrible? Did you have a buyer's agent or did you negotiate with the listing agent?
