JoAnns rant

I know I don't post often, but I just had to share my latest JoAnn fabric experience.... Confused

Went to buy some fleece for two baby blankets. Ended up deciding to back both of them in the same pink fleece. OF COURSE, I stand in line for the cutting table (there are about 3 people in front of me, and the pull-out numbers are way off so I don't take one). Everyone else decides to get in line behind me and pull numbers. Long story short- Luckily I had a lady agree that I was there before her and let me go in front of her without a number...

Finally got up to the cutting table and asked for two, one yard pieces of the pink fleece. She says " I can only cut a two yard piece, there are too many people in line so no specialty cuts" Since when is two cuts off the same bolt a specialty cut? I felt like I should have brought her two bolts of the same color to cut just to be a snot about it. Whatever. I can cut it in half myself when I get home.

The only thing that made it better was that she gave me 50% off of one of the cuts b/c there was some kind of defect in the pattern. There were light dye marks throughout the rest of the bolt that were on both sides... hoping it washes out, but if not, it's not really that noticable.

I really wish we had more options for fabric in our town.... :/

We don't have the pull-out numbers at our local store. Most of the time this isn't a problem but once in a while you get a cranky old person who thinks they get to go next because they are 90 and have waited 5 min... umm no... I've been here 20.

Finally got up to the cutting table and asked for two, one yard pieces of the pink fleece. Sorry but if I'm in line after you and I hear your request to make two cuts off the same bolt it would make me a more than a little stabby because while it's not hard for the cutting people to do it, you are wasting my crafting time.

The only thing that made it better was that she gave me 50% off of one of the cuts b/c there was some kind of defect in the pattern. There were light dye marks throughout the rest of the bolt that were on both sides... hoping it washes out, but if not, it's not really that noticable.

    I hope it washes out.

  • The places around here won't cut two pieces of the same cloth either.  That's really the job of the consumer when she gets home.

  • Hobby Lobby won't and the local stores around me won't.

  • The store is usually not packed when I go (and the ones near me don't require numbers, you just stand in line and people are pretty honest about it), so I've never had a problem getting "specialty cuts". The problem I have is that I can't do it at home because I don't have a big cutting table (I use the floor and my small 18x24" mat to cut things!).

  • Hmmm...I wonder if mine does "specialty cuts."  I've never had the need.

As much as I hate the wait, I do LOVE the number system.  Grab a number when I walk in the door and shop until they call your number (they do it over the speaker if you aren't near the tables).  So much better than waiting in line.

Makes things so much easier! Although, as they get closer to my number I feel the need to get closer to the cutting counter b/c sometimes they don't give you a chance to get from way across the store and will move on to the next number.

And I don't see how cutting 2 x's from the same bolt is a "specialty cut".  Like another pp, I don't have the space to do it at home on the floor on my small cutting mat.  How is it any different than cutting from another bolt?  I'm w/ op on this one.  And Joanns is soooooo hit or miss.  I've had absolutely terrible experiences and some great ones all at the same store. Ya never know.

I don't buy much fabric but I agree. If it were several bolts that someone wanted multiple cuts from each, one yard at a time, yeah, I'd get peeved, but to ask for two cuts from just one bolt? She probably spent more time denying the request than it would have taken to just cut it.

  • I agree with ppl - grab a number before you pick out your fabric.  The number system is pretty simple and creates less drama.

It is not the job of the Joanns worker to cut your fabric into 1 yard increments.  It is your choice to not have a big enough mat or cutting space.  You might get "specialty cuts" if there is no line.  If I was behind you, I might get crabby.

  • I don't think your request was unreasonable at all (I mean, I've watched my cutting staff sit there for 10 minutes discussing the differing virtues of their interfacing products or pairing off two fabrics from a pile of 30 bolts to try to make the customer happy about the color match), I definitely wouldn't ask them to cut twice from the same bolt.

Because, if I did, I'd likely end up with two 35" pieces, instead of two full yards. Accuracy- not their strong suit. :-p

This is how I see it.  It's a craft/sewing store's job to sell the product; it's our job to do everything else.  Besides, if you don't have a big enough space for cutting, how do you lay out the fabric for cutting out a pattern?

  • I really would not care if the person in front of me asked the cutting person to cut it into two separate one yard increments.  Especially if it was only two pieces from the one bolt which it sounds like.  That's like 15 seconds.

Now it would be different if someone was cutting all kinds of fabric into all kinds of sizes separately from multiple bolts.  THAT would irritate me.  I don't think OP's request was THAT big of a deal though.

The problem is that if you do one 'specialty cut' for one person, you have to do it for everyone.  It sets a precedent.  Then you get complaints of "she did it for her and not for me."

  • I guess I disagree - I wait in line just like everyone else. The ladies at my Joann aren't nice and I've only gotten them to agree to a "specialty cut" once in 10 years. I have a huge craft table but I can't cut it straight like they can. I don't have grooves in my table.

I'm not sure how two one yard cuts from the same bolt can hold people up so much and make them so mad. I never go into Joann with the intent of getting in and out in a hurry because it just doesn't happen.

Luckily my husband works at a fabric store and I can have them cut my fabric to whatever size I need. It's right across the street from Joann so often I will just take it over to his store and cut it myself. :)

  • I used to think that JoAnns was ok, until I tried to buy fabric for DD's Halloween costume.  I needed 5 yards of a costume satin and they only had 3. This was at the beginning of September. When I asked if there was more they said no.  Then I asked who sells Halloween costume fabric and not have more in the stockroom?  She answered that they've had Halloween fabric since June... Super Angry Basically telling that I was wrong witing until this late (labor day....!) for Halloween.
  • I personally wouldn't ask most of the workers at my local JoAnns to cut something into smaller pieces. They are neither capable of cutting straight nor counting. I needed 3 yds of something once and she cut 2 yds. When I called her out on it, she tried to snatch my pattern out of my hand so she could figure out if she could get away with just cutting another yard. I was like, um no... I want 3 yds, not 2 yds and 1 yd, it's not for this pattern. She's one lady I avoid.

  • I'm totally meh on this. So she wouldn't cut the same fabric. I can see the case for it on either side but I cannot for the life of me come up with anything even resembling a rant.

Now when she shorts you by half a yard, then we can talk ranting.

This for sure.   They never cut things on the straight grain either, so I would never use a one yard cut as is from them, unless I wanted a wonky finished blanket that I would be embarrassed to tell anyone that I made.
