IL Re: And so it begins

My MIL is recently retired. She spent the summer at their summer house where she has a whole set of "summer" friends. A little voice in my head told me then that I would probably would get a big wake-up call from her in the fall. Well that time has come.

For T-giving have made arrangements to rent a house in Duck w/ them & my parents- any other family members are welcome as well, as the house is huge. The community has an indoor pool, we can walk to town and a fair number of businesses should still be open. Everyone has to travel and no one has to put up overnight guests- win-win! I thought this was a good solution to dealing with who goes where, who hosts, etc.

We are going on the post-Xmas-trip. St. Lucia, involves overnight layovers on our part, but we aren't leaving until a few days after Christmas, which was always one of my issues. I am not thrilled at the prospect but whatever.

So in the last 2 days she has e-mailed us about going up there the weekend before Christmas so we can see her side of the family. Um, no. We are spending a week with you @ Thanksgiving and doing some rather insane travel to spend 5 days w/ you immediately after Christmas. Obviously DH's reply that that would not be going, got her juices flowing because today she invited herself down for the pre-Halloween weekend. Um, no again. Your daughter already beat you & invited herself down for the following weekend. We already have plans for that weekend and I don't need overnight guests 2 weekends in a row. We will see you 2 weeks after that for the Thanksgiving trip.

I am just waiting for her to reply that she and FIL will be down the same weekend as SIL.

Maybe just book the hotel for them?

  • Having them stay @ a hotel is kind of ridiculous, seeing as we do have 2 empty bedrooms. They did right after Davis was born of course, but now there is no need.  I just don't want or need weekends of back-to-back house guests, nor do I need them here 2-3 weeks before spending 5+ days with them.

ETA- even if they stayed in a hotel I wouldn't want them down that weekend, it would still involve eating 2 meals a day w/ them, entertaining them, etc.

  • I should have used a Stick out tongue I probably would not be able to justify people staying in a hotel when they visit us, either. The whole spending time with people is kind of annoying and back-to-back visits are exhausting.

  • I see no problem with leaving guest bedrooms empty...looks at my guest room that ILs are not welcome at since the previous issues.

  • Well, when I started reading your post, I thought you were going to say she was moving down to be closer to you....so I guess it could be worse...right??

Back to back guests as the holiday season gets underway is too much.

ZOMG yes, that would be worse. Thank goodness for small favors in that she has lived in the same town her whole life and would never leave her island.
