Questions about video cameras

The Christmas before my first kid was born my DH bought me the obligatory "you are a mom now and you'll want to videotape your kids" video camera.  It's a Pansonic something-or-other and has been very good to us.  And he was right, I took a ton of video of my first born - third born, not as much.  Embarrassed

However, it requires little mini tapes - and the tapes of video I've taken of the kids over the past 4 years are stacked in a drawer.  I used to be vigilent about labeling them very accurately, but over time I now have a few ones with no labels and my slight-OCD tendencies are wanting to take over.  I've got to get these things onto DVD or on my computer or somewhere or they'll never see the light of day.  DD #1 especially likes to see herself on video, but it's clunky to get the tapes out, find the cords to hook the camera up to the TV, etc.

My grand idea is I need a video camera that puts movies into video files.  I'm sure you can tell by that sentence that I am not tech savvy at all (yes, my cell phone is a basic flip phone).  Are those types of cameras ridiculously expensive?  I'm sure they can be... are there any out there that are for normal people?  What do I even Google?  I Googled "digital camera" but of course that brings up regular, not video, cameras.

Also I'm sure I need some kind of software on my computer to manage video files, right?

I'm really starting at square one here - any advice is much appreciated.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
