On the topic of Disney...

We've been planning for awhile to do Disney in 2012. My intent was to do it right after Maren finished school (June 1) so it wasn't super hot yet. Well, something has come up and I'm pretty sure it's going to be impossible for us to go anywhere from about late May through the mid-end of July. It's out of my control so I have to try and work around it.

Now I'm trying to figure out our next best option.  Maren is in first grade, and Blake in Pre-K.  He'll go to K in the fall.  So far I'm considering:

1) Spring Break (the week of March 12th)
2) Sometime during the month of August (but before school starts around the 20th of the month)

I won't pull Maren from school (or Blake, once he enters the school system), so unless we go during Spring break or Summer vacation - we're looking at waiting until the holidays and I'm not crazy about that.  We're going away this Thanksgiving break so I'd like to stay home next year.  I'd also prefer not to travel for the week of Christmas break.

Both of our current options have positives and negatives.

#1 will have super weather, but large crowds and higher costs. I'm not a big fan of crowds. Disney will be challenging enough for me as it is, so I may be crazy to consider going during peak time.

#2 will likely be less busy and potentially cheaper, but hot as hell. Obviously we're used to hot/humid weather, but I'd still like to avoid walking around for hours in it with kids in tow if I can.

If you're a Disney vet and were faced with this choice, which would you select? Also, if you can think of another option I may have overlooked - please share!

Thanks!
Crissy

  • I've taken my team during spring break 3 times. It's not near as bad as you would think it is....at least to me it wasn't.

  • Would Disneyland be acceptable?  The weather there is SO much nicer.

That being said, how long are you looking to go?  Is there any four day break in the school year?  I would choose option #1, just because it is our Spring Break, it isn't everyones'.

  • I've been in August, December and January.  I'd go for spring break.  It was MISERABLE in August.  Can you put it off and go at Christmas break?

I've thought about Disneyland.  Mainly because of the other sites to see, plus we can always shoot down to SD and hit LegoLand as well.  Also - DH and the kids have never been to Cali so it would be fun for them.  It's still a possibility, but there are a few attractions at DW that we'd all really like to see.  I'm torn.

I think we're looking at about 5-6 days.  I don't want to feel too rushed, but I know after 5-6 days on vaca with kids - you're all kind of ready to get home and back into the routine.

I know Spring Breaks vary, but I figure most in the country fall in the March/April time frame.  Pair that with the more temperate weather, and I assumed it would be a more attractive time for most people to go. Hence larger crowds and higher prices.  Though I'm sure regardless of when we go, there will be lots of people and plenty of money spent!

I think I'm leaning more towards March, just because I realllllly dislike being outdoors for extended periods when it's uncomfortably hot.

  • I appreciate all of the responses and advice.  March is looking better and better!

The only significant time off during the school year is Spring Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Christmas Break.  Otherwise it's only a half or full day here and there.

As neat as it would be to go during Christmas, I'd prefer to be home.  If Christmas was our only option, I would definitely do it.  But faced with a choice between Spring Break or Christmas Break, I'd pick Spring Break.

  • I would rather gouge my eyes out than go to Disney in the summer.

I think I'd do Christmas break as a first option, and Spring Break as a 2nd. I only say that because I really love Disney at Christmas!

I agree with this.  The weather was nice and it was not bad at all.  In fact, we are going in March this year.

  • March for sure.  There will be crowds, but honestly it's such a big place that you won't notice a difference.

We went at the end of September 2 years ago for Abbie's b-day and it was over 100 degrees every day.  It was absolutely miserable.  Next time we go we're going in Spring or over Christmas for sure.  We also went when the meal plan was free at certain hotels so it was really packed.  It wasn't that big of a deal since there are so many parks, modes of transportation, etc.

    this

  • It's also going to be busier in august then spring break. Summer is one of the most packed times.

And as demetri martin says "the theme of theme parks seems to be overweight people standing in line."  And most people are pretty grumpy when it's hot and they're packed in like sardines with other sweaty people they don't know.
