What do you do for follow-up after you've applied online?

Let's say you've applied to a company with around 4k employees (so not really a small company) through their online careers page.

You don't know anyone at this company, and their "contact us" page is just one of those forms with no real contact info.

What, if anything, do you do for follow up? Look them up on linkedin and try to figure out who might be either HR or possibly in the department you're interested in?

I hate feeling like I've dropped my CV down a black hole.

  • Do you think it would be acceptable to call the main number and ask to be transferred to HR?  I did that to get my first job out of college...not sure if it's common practice to do so.  My boss later told me they realized that they were going to have to hire me or kill me, because I kept calling.

    lol!

So I was able to find a few phone numbers - one for their corporate HQ and some others for different offices/locations.

Which do you think I should use, the HQ or the office where I believe the job will be located?

  • I posted this question just last month in here and based on the replies I got, my understanding was that it's better to call than to write an email follow up.

So based on I have called the main line and asked to be transferred to the HR department. Some companies are okay doing this, others say "are you calling to check on the status of your application? If so, you just have to wait for them to contact you."

  • I don't think it hurts to call after a week or so, especially if you haven't received even an auto email back saying they received your app/resume. I would call the company's main number and ask for HR - specifically who is in charge of hiring for X dept. I know at my company there is 1 lady that does our office and a guy that does the plant hiring.  I would assume HR is located in the main HQ rather than a specific location. At least that is how it works at my job.
  • I'm the HR person that receives these calls.  I get them all day long and part of my job is to protect our recruiter because she just doesn't have time to talk to everyone.  When people ask about their status I just direct them back to our website and say we will contact them if they are selected for an interview. (however our website has you build a profile that tells you whether you are being considered for the position you applied for, etc).

I'd say call the Corp HQ and ask for HR.  I personally don't mind receiving these calls because I think it shows initiative and that these people are generally interested and not just applying to anything they see.
