Making a change

DH and a I are going to be starting the South Beach diet Monday. It was his suggestion after a pants-buying experience didn't go quite the way he wanted it to.

I lost like, 45 pounds on it about 5 years ago. I don't think I'll be able to lose that much this time, but every little bit helps.

The first two weeks is kinda like Atkins, no sugar, no carbs, you HAVE to eat breakfast. I can't drink coffee without sugar or with artificial sweeteners but I'm good with tea and Splenda, but I love coffee, and tea just isn't the same. Although I'm going today to get Javavana mate from Teavana.

So wish me luck, it's gonna be hard, but hopefully worth it.

  • Awww yeah everybody has had that dressing room experience in some fashion...GL!  Of course it will be worth it!  Improving how you eat (not just for weight loss) will truly make you feel better in the long run.

I did a show years back where the majority of the cast went on South Beach just to sort of jump start the weight loss process (we were dancing so dang much it wasn't really even necessary) but even so, it was a pretty good way to kick start the process for us at least.

If nothing else, changing how you eat shows you just how much "bad" stuff you really consume, you know?  And then you can make better long-term choices.

Let us know how you're doing! :-)

  • Maybe he can just start counting his calories, eating better & exercising. My DH has lost almost 100ibs in the past 2 years by doing just that. He tries to eat 1500 calories a day & work out 30mins 3x per week. I don't think your diet needs to be so restrictive to be effective. Losing weight is a big numbers game. You can find out how many calories to eat per day to lose 1-2ibs a week on sparkpeople.com. Eating a healthy diet and not restricting yourself in different ways also makes a diet easier to stick with for the long haul. I've gotten into food blogs and found really delicious healthy recipes that are low in calories but keep me full longer. HTH!

  • We are doing South Beach too! I do drink coffee the first 2 weeks, but I dont put sugar in it anyway. Ive always done that. I lost a lot of weight on South Beach a few years ago too. I actually like the diet a lot, its a way of eating that I stick too.  GL
  • Wow - I totally understand that clothes-trying-on experience! DH and I have been down that road for sure! TY for posting this - I did SB with my ex back in '04 and was successful with it too...I still have all the books, so I may pull them out this weekend and get us set up to start on Sunday! Keep us posted on your successes!!
  • Good luck!  I've done the South Beach diet a couple of times in the past.  I really like it.  I use it to start as a jump start to weight loss, but when I get to zone 3 I like how to turns into more of a lifestyle change.  I have a tendency to eat my food with lots of sauces and things, or over pasta, and after some time eating meat/fish and veggies, and not always having a ton of pasta/rice/potatoes, I always feel so much better.  It makes me more conscious of what I make for dinner, even when I'm not following the diet anymore.

  • Thanks guys! I have a calorie counting app on my phone and I'm friends in it with my mom (a personal trainer) and my brother's gf who is heavy and using my mom to lose weight. I want to join a gym that's nearby but DH is opposed to the idea, he says he doesn't want to pay for anything, that we can exercise at home or run outside. But we don't have any gym equipment and this is northeast ohio, we're due for snow ANY DAY. *sigh* might have to just pay for and go by myself.

  • Good luck with the diet! I use the calorie count app too and I love it. I am an awful sweet tooth so I decided to treat myself with one 30 calorie mini kitkat every day after lunch. If you can't do gym, try working out with Jillian Michaels - her 30 day shred is intense and will make you believe you have run for an hour or more every time you do it.
