Thoughts on what to do

So I went to Lee Outlets over the weekend on my way to meet my advisor in Massachusetts.  I called my sister to ask if she wanted me to pick anything up.  She has my nephew and I thought it would be nice to ask if she wanted me to pick up something from one of the kid outlets.  Plus her hubby asked me to pick up some growlers of beer from a local brewery while I was over there.  So I got my nephew some clothes (only things my sister asked for) and my BIL some beer.  I figured she would give me the money I spent on those items.  She usually does but she hasn't even mentioned or asked me how much I spent.  I spent over $50 - which I don't have to spend haphazardly since I'm back in school.  Should I wait and see if she asks another day?  How do I mention it to her if she doesn't bring it up?  I left the receipt with the clothes I bought but I never told her how much the beer was.  I've never been in a situation like this with her, she's always been really on top of things.

Re: Thoughts on what to do

  • I would wait 1 more day but I think a week is plenty of time, she should pay you back by the weekend.  I feel like people take advantage of me because they think I have money to waste, so sometimes I have to be honest with people and let them know I need my $$.  It might not be on her mind.. had you planning on gtg?  is she just waiting til she sees you next, or has she already?
  • I gave her the stuff the day I got it last Saturday.  Sure, she may not have had the money that very day but I saw her again the next 2 days after that, I even watched my nephew.  She usually asks me how much she owes me and then give me the money the next time she sees me but she didn't even ask me this time.
  • Yeah... that's pretty awkward.

I would give her a full week, then just say something to her.  Perhaps it just slipped her mind.... or maybe she was waiting to find out how much the beer cost?  I dunno...

Maybe you could say something like "Oh, I'm really sorry, I forgot to get back to you on how much those growlers cost last weekend."

Good luck!  Let us know how it turns out

  • If you've already seen her, I'd bring it up.  Could be a busy mommy thing, I can be terribly forgetful!  I like pp suggestion as well.. I'd just try to slip it into the conversation, even if it's like "I have to remember to pay X bill this weekend.. oh by the way.." :P
  • Thanks.  I'm sure I'll see her this weekend.  She is planning on bringing my nephew down to the Fall fair that I'm working at this weekend.  I figured I'd ask her if her DH tried one of the growlers and then maybe she'll ask about how much she owes me.
  • So I saw my sister today.  She had tried to go to the ATM by my house but it was shut down I guess.  She told me that she'd have to pay me back later when she picked me up.  I didn't even ask.  Whew.  I'm glad I didn't have to ask.  I know she will pay me back, she's good about doing that she just got me a little nervous when she didn't ask last week or say anything.
  • Yay!!!  Glad she brought it up,  Money issues with family can be so awkward... and it stinks to sort of feel either blown off or taken advantage of.  Glad its not the case.
