I got a strange letter in the mail today from the Chevy dealer where we bought our car in January. They state they're are experiencing heavy demand from buyers wanting to buy used 2011 Equinoxes and they don't have enough inventory to meet the demand so they encourage us to trade ours in for a 2012.
It could be true, it may not be true - and it's clearly a sales tactic, but I'm just wondering is this "normal"? Has anyone else ever gotten anything like this? We never got anything about our GMC (though one day getting it serviced they did have a sign posted that said "We need more of the following car models to meet used car demands...." and our car model was listed).
Anyway, just curious. I mean, our car isn't even a year old (and only has 4200 miles!) and we have a 0% APR note - - I would never trade it in unless I got another 0% financing, that's for sure!
Re: Solicited to trade in car - anyone?
That's the crazy thing! It IS a brand new car. It still smells new! The Equinox was redesigned in 2010 so I am sure that people looking to buy them used probably want the newer style and that means only 2010 or 2011 (not a ton to choose from) so maybe it's true but who knows.
I am tempted to just call and see. We LOVE the car but we kind of regret not getting the highest trim package with all the bells and whistles but, meh, I'd only do it if I got 0% again and my payment didn't go up.
I love new cars too, Sunshine :P

We got a letter like that for our Honda Civic. I can't remember what year it was...I think an 08. We bought it brand new. It was only a couple of years old when we got the letter.
We actually did go in and trade it in, but we didn't get anything new from them, we just took the money and ran!
I've gotten a similar letter from our Volkswagon Dealership for my 03 and I know my parents have gotten similar letters over the years for their car.
I'd say it's pretty normal.
Part of it is probably just getting your interest in a new car so they can get a commission. I doubt they really work that hard for a used car, especially considering they make less on used cars compared to new ones.
Oh, I have no doubt they want to sell a new car -- I guess I was just surprised about the letter since my car is only 9 months old!
Seems it's pretty common - learn something new every day.
I still get letters about my 08 Mazda6. I haven't had that car since we returned it to the dealership when the lease was up in July 2010.
Clearly it's a sales tactic...and the dealership I got mine from really needs to keep better records.
