Total waste of money and totally my fault - hotel cancellation

I was supposed to go on a trip for work, so I reserved my hotel room.  I then got unapproved to go and like an idiot I didn't cancel my room. Their no show policy is to charge one night's stay plus taxes.  This was all totally out of my mind until I just got my credit card bill and saw the charge.

I'm out of luck, yes?  Of course I called and the hotel says yes, that's the policy, no recourse. I totally get it - they have to make their money.

This it toally my fault - I feel like crying.  Would it help to contact headquarters with a sob story or something?  What a huge waste of money.  EmbarrassedCrying

Re: Total waste of money and totally my fault - hotel cancellation

  • I think you're out of luck, I'm sorry.  I once had success in getting out of that policy when I called a few minutes after the deadline (I think there was a 24 hour rule before arrival) because I cancelled my trip at the last minute because my husband was having surgery.  But I also know in that case they could resell the room because the whole city was sold out.  Given the time that has passed, I don't think there's going to be much you can do.  You can always try though.
  • Oh no, that totally sucks but I would give yourself a break. You have a lot on your plate. You could possibly try to get it reversed but since they've already charged it to your card, it's probably unlikely. I would just try to let it go. DH recently got a $100 ticket for not renewing his registration on his car. It expired when we were in the middle of moving and having a baby. Sometimes when you have a lot going on, things slip through the cracks so don't beat yourself up too much. I'm sorry though. I know it it totally sucks watching money go down the drain.

  • Was it someplace fun that you'd like to visit? That happened to me once and I called the hotel manager and explained that I was scheduled for work and forgot to cancel it. I asked if they would honor it as a credit towards a future stay and they did. Just another thought.
  • That stinks.

I was in the same suitation last year except DH and I completely forget we had hotel reservations until we saw the charge go through.  I ended up calling them the day after and made up a story about a family emergency and because of the stress we forgot.

They ended up refunding the entire amount.  We do still stay at the hotel when we travel.

  • I did the same thing a few weeks ago except it was for a personal trip.  We were all sick, cancelled the trip at the last minute, and I forgot to cancel the hotel.

I called the corporate office up on Monday and asked if they would waive the fee.  It was Marriott and I'm a member of their rewards program and have been for years, but they said it was up to the hotel manager.  They sent him an email/put in a request on my behalf.  I got a lecturing email, but they did say they've waive it this one time.

So, I'd say if you have a relationship with them, it's worth a phone call to try.
